Evita at Milton Keynes Theatre Review

Reviewed Amanda Browne

We visited Milton Keynes Theatre on Tuesday 23rd of May to watch the opening night of Evita. The theatre is well situated in Milton Keynes and there is ample nearby parking. We collected our tickets and enjoyed pre-drinks in the lovely Ambassador Lounge. My mum was super excited as we took to our seats, she had heard good things about this musical and knew the story. I however did not. You didn’t need to. I had assumed I would struggle with this musical as had kind of guessed that there would be no speaking. You should never assume!

From the opening moment, I was engrossed. The setting of a funeral casket and mourners, the singing was beautiful. I felt I was in the presence of greatness. The orchestra coupled with the voices, it was fantastic. The show is narrated by Che… he sings the life story of the star of the show Eva Peron former First Lady of Argentina. Emma Hatton plays Eva with such passion and grace, with a truly amazing voice to go with it. Gian Marco Schiaretti who plays Che is extremely handsome with an extremely amazing voice to match.

Stand out moments, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina and Santa Evita of course, the hair on the back of my neck bristled, I’m not often overwhelmed, but I thought they were incredible. Oscar Balmaseda’s On This Night of a Thousand Stars also deserves a mention.

I have to say I can’t imagine this out of place on Broadway or the West End such was the whole experience. The whole cast were amazing and the numbers where the whole company performed were brilliant. No one put a foot out of place that I saw. The young lady who performed a solo! So brave and faultless. There is nothing I didn’t like. I felt it was over in a flash and I was left wanting more. The final dress worn by Eva Peron was simply stunning, which in all honesty just about sums this show up, simply stunning.

We mostly certainly will watch this show again, it’s at Milton Keynes until Saturday, you won’t be disappointed if you go!
