Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the King’s Theatre Edinburgh Review

Reviewed by Lynsey Roberts

This production is exactly what you would expect from an Edward Albee play. It is gripping and draped with humour and suspense. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is about an unhappily married middle aged couple that after a party, invite a young couple back for drinks. As the drinks flow the two couples get drunker, crazier and reveal some of their most darkest secrets.

Sara Stewart is fantastic as the drunken, extrovert and vulgar Martha, with great stage presence from laugh out loud funny to heartfelt sorrow – she definitely stole the show for me. Robin Kingsland plays Martha’s pushed around, fed up, drunken husband very convincingly and at times very cringeworthy. While Paul Albertson and Rose Reynolds are equally as good as the awkward guests – arrogant Nick and shy Honey. All of whom make up this very bizarre foursome which makes for an interesting plot that will have you gripped from beginning to end.

The King’s is a traditional small theatre with a welcoming warm atmosphere and ambiance. It is very comfortable and clean with extremely helpful, friendly staff. Our seats in the dress balcony provided a good view of the stage. The theatre is located in the heart of Edinburgh City Centre, so easily accessible by public transport with parking available around the theatre. There is also plenty of option for pre/post theatre drinks and food with the variety of restaurants and bars nearby.

I had a really enjoyable evening at the King’s Theatre watching this talented cast.  I would recommend the production to friends and family however not necessarily one for the kids. And with the play having three parts and being over three hours long you certainly get your money’s worth!
