Captain No Beard An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life Review

Reviewed by David Savage

Captain No Beard, a young boy called Alexander, sets off on an imaginary voyage on his ship The Flying Dragon with his first mate and cousin, Hallie, and his fearless crew of stuffed toys; Mongo the Monkey, Linus the Lion and Fribbet the Frog. They are in search of treasure – as pirates always are!

Once Alexander, his cousin and toys board his bed their world is transformed, using the power of imagination, into The Flying Dragon where they sail the seas looking for treasure, encounter storms and meet a mermaid!

The beautifully written and colourfully illustrated book by award winning author Carole P Roman is a delight to read, and my 3 year old niece enjoyed it too! Although a short book it is perfect for bedtime reading and encourages imaginative play as well as questions about pirates.

My niece loves the story as it is very easy to understand what is happening and the bright, bold illustrations enable toddlers to visualise the story while adding in their own interpretations. And since having the book read to her several times now, she also pretends to be a pirate when not being a princess!

A great little book that children will enjoy!
