Like a lot of children my two sons are into superheroes. They have been fans of Marvel for years dressing up as their favourite superheroes, playing with action figures and watching the cartoons. They are now getting older, but their Marvel love hasn’t wavered with them now enjoying the movies and playing with themed games. Marvel has been around a long time and is still so popular amongst kids and adults.

My two boys were excited to get to play with two Marvel games, especially as we are fairly familiar with both of them, so they’ve made a great addition to our collection. The two games are made by Funko and are both small which makes them perfect little extra stocking filler gifts for Christmas. I don’t think you can go wrong with buying a card/board game for children for Christmas especially as they can then be played and enjoyed with all the family.

Something Wild Spiderman

Something Wild is a card game from Funko that comes with a mini Funko character as part of the game play. It is recommended for 6+ years and is for 2-4 players. We are familiar with the Something Wild card game as we have a few other editions such as Disney Villains. However we have not played a Marvel one before.

The card game is packaged in a small card box making it easy to store and also a great one for travelling with. In the box are two decks of cards, a small Spiderman Funko figure and an instruction booklet. That’s all that is needed for this simple, but fun card game. The first thing I noticed is how good quality the cards are. They are thick and not easily torn or bent.

The game is so easy to learn, and the gameplay is quick with each game taking around 15 to play. The 45 character cards are shuffled then three are dealt to each player. The power cards are also shuffled then the top card flipped over. On your turn you draw and play a card in front of you. The cards are different colours, with a number at the top and feature different Spiderman characters. The aim of the game is to make a set (with three numbers the same) or a run (three cards of the same colour with numbers in order). When you score you receive the top power card. These cards have different abilities which can help you score. However, to use the power card you must have the Spiderman figure which you gain by matching a coloured card with the current flipped over power card. The first to score three powers is the winner.

We love playing Something Wild. It’s a fun strategy card game that we often get quite competitive with when we play. What I love the most is that Something Wild games can be combined. We shuffled our Disney deck with the Spiderman one to have extra powers and figures to play with.

Marvel Battleworld – Series 3 Ultimate Armory Battle Ball

Marvel battleworld is another game we know and love. My son has been collecting since it began with series 1. The battle balls are now on to series 3. The great thing about this game is that it’s fun whether you have only one set to play with or a big collection of cards and characters as we do.

The Ultimate Armory Battle Ball is a plastic capsule that opens to reveal cards, tokens, dice, a figure and blind bag figure and Thanos stone. It is a surprise which character will be included so like with all blind bag toys you can end up with duplicates. The figures are all Marvel characters and each has its own card with different abilities. The aim of the game is to beat Thanos by winning battles against different villains. The villain cards have different numbers and you must roll the dice and try to exceed the number to defeat them. If you win enough battles you defeat Thanos and win the Thanos stone.

This is my son’s favourite part of the game. The Thanos stone is made of cardboard and can be cracked open to reveal another character to add to your collection. Of course you can play the game multiple times without opening a stone at the end as there is only one per ball.

Unlike a lot of card games this is one that can be played solo or as a group. My son often plays by himself using multiple figures. But it’s also lovely to play alongside his brother, each picking characters out and working together to win the battles.

Just like we’ve found with all the other Funko toys we’ve played, the Marvel Battleworld is really well made and we love the little Marvel figures. They are small though so this toy is recommended for children aged 6+.

RRP: £8.00

Both of these games have given my children hours of entertainment and we as adults love getting involved playing too. I think £8.00 is very reasonable for the quality. A fab little Christmas gift for little Marvel fans.

Both of these can be purchased from Funko Europe here and here.
