Located on Streatham High Road, SW16 Bar & Kitchen might look like your average friendly neighbourhood bar from the outside, but step inside and you’ll quickly realise it’s so much more! A short stroll from Streatham Hill Station, it’s super easy to get to, making it a perfect spot for a midweek treat or a relaxed weekend affair if you find yourself in South London.
The evening I visited, the team was hosting a Sicilian-themed supper club (note: the theme changes each month so make sure you check the website!), and what a treat it was! The front bar has a cosy, buzzing feel, but heading through to the back, the space transforms. A long communal table, soft lighting, and around 12- 14 guests – none of whom I knew (apart from my partner) – all coming together over a shared love of food and wine. There’s something really comforting about that kind of set-up as it felt more like a dinner party than a restaurant booking, hosted by the brilliant General Manager and in-house wine expert and Head Chef, who prepared the evening’s fantastic spread.
We kicked things off with a limoncello and bergamot sour – a citrusy cocktail that cleansed the palate and set the mood nicely. Bright, fragrant, and just the right amount of zing – yum!
Next came the antipasti, served cicchetti-style with sharing plates that came out in a steady, generous flow. The arancini, stuffed with beef mince and peas, were a standout – classically crispy on the outside, rich and hearty inside. We also enjoyed sardine beccafico with pine nuts and raisins for a savoury-sweet twist, swordfish involtini, red prawn tartar that was fresh and delicate, and bruschetta topped with a silky aubergine caponata.
The star of the show? The maccheroni alla Norma. A classic done incredibly well. Al dente pasta, cherry tomatoes, salted ricotta and aubergine. Sweet and salty, light yet comforting. I can only wish I could make pasta as tasty as this!
For the main course, we were served pan-fried red tuna with a pistachio and citrus salad. A clean and elegant dish, the tuna was seared beautifully – tender, fresh, and paired perfectly with the zesty crunch of the salad.
By dessert, I was admittedly flagging after devouring the previous courses. But the ricotta cannolo with chocolate and citrus was too tempting to resist entirely. I managed half and wrapped the rest to take home – a decision I thanked my past self for the following day!
At £55 per person, it offers great value for an evening packed with delicious food, wonderful wine, and great company. Tom kept the drinks coming with generous pours, and by the end, it felt like we’d all known each other for ages. This was more than just a meal – it was a proper night out!
If good food, good wine and good company sound like your idea of la dolce vita, SW16 Bar & Kitchen’s supper club is well worth a visit.
