Until only a few days ago I hadn’t heard of Superthings or had any idea what they are.  Superthings are the lastest collectable toy from Magicbox Toys, with the Power Machine Series released a few weeks ago. Superthings are popular with children of primary school age.

The little characters are approximately an inch tall and come in over 80 different designs and brightly coloured. The characters are everyday objects brought to life as super heroes or super villains.  White eyes mean it is a super hero and yellow eyes are for the super villians. Some of the characters are classed as rare or ultra rare. We haven’t found any of these yet but will keep looking.

The idea is that you have battles against the different figures. There is a information sheet that comes with the character to tell you who versus who or alternatively create your own battles.

My 6 year old son was so chuffed when we were asked to review Superthings Power Machines. He had recently seen another child playing with the characters in the park and instantly became drawn to them and wanted some of his own.

I was sceptical at first about whether or not he would play with them, but honestly, he has played with them for hours. They are his favourite toy at the moment.  He sets the figures up and pretends to have battles with them. They have been great for developing his imagination, literacy and numeracy skills, both verbally and written, as he records the battles’ results.

The are many different accessories and additions to add to the Superthings such as: Power Jet vehicles, Hideouts, Battle Spinners and Powerbots.

The PowerJet vehicles add a lot of fun to the action, trying to bash the other Powerbot vehicle out of the way and win the round. Again, there are rare vehicles to collect. We were lucky to find a gold vehicle, that my son thinks is amazing. Only he is allowed to play with it.

Our favorite toy from the Superthings Power Machines collection is the Battle Spinner. This is very similar to a spinning top toy in that it keeps spinning rapidly at high-speed.

There is a tube that holds the Superthing and spinning section together. You then pull a leaver tab through the top of the tube which causes the spinning section to gain power and start spinning at great speed.
Initially my son found it hard to pull the leaver out fast enough to create the spinning power but once I had done it several times, it became easier. We were surprised at how fast and long it spun round for.  The idea would be to have two spinners going at the same time and see if they knock each other over or which spins for the longest amount of time to identify the winner.

My son is really enjoing the Superthings; I like that they are affordable for him to buy new additions at not much cost out of his money. For example, he bought himself the hideout for £3. Or for me to buy as a treat for him as a one pack that contains one character, known as one pack, costs the same as a packet of sweets, for instance.

A big part of the enjoyment is that the one pack and vehicle pack are blind packets, you can not see what is in the packet until you open it. The excitement and anticipation on his face is priceless as he opens the packet up.  With over 80 characters and 8 different vehicles to collect, we  haven’t had any duplicates yet.

With Easter in a few weeks, Super things would make a lovely gift as an Easter treat.  We have a request for a second battle spinner as an Easter gift from a relative. The relative is pleased to be getting him something he enjoys playinging with, that is healthier than chocolate, will last longer and is more fun overall.

I do agree with him that Superthings are a better alternative to an Easter egg and are like for like on the cost front.
There is something in the range to suit all budgets.
The starter pack is excellent value as it includes a: comic, Power Jet vehicle and 4 Superthings characters for £5.

Feedback from my 6-year-old. He loves that there are so many different characters that he can collect and play with. The heroes are his favourite. He likes that he can buy them with his own money and hopeful he will get an ultra-rare character. He’s looking forward to showing his friends.

I’m not sure of the longevity before he decides there is something new he’d like to get into but he currently loves Superthings, plays with them daily on his own or with us and they are popular with his friends aged 5-8yrs old.

Overall I rate Superthings Power Machines 5/5.
