I, like many parents, am always on the look out for new interactive toys and activities in an attempt to keep my child entertained. Mess free or at least with the mess contained and easily cleaned is always a plus. My son loves sand play so I was interested to try this ‘Super Sand Dinosaurs kit’.

The parcel arrived in plain packaging with no excess waste. The item itself is packaged in a colourful cardboard box, again no unnecessary plastic wrapping in sight. The colourful and bright design on the cardboard slip is very appealing to children. The items themselves are within a bright lime green plastic case (measuring H24, W28.5, D5.5cm). This opens easily for an adult but as the clips open in opposite directions, I think does a good job of keeping very little hands from being unable to open themselves, at least until they are supervised.

Within the box, two different coloured sands are included; 300g of white (grey like in actual colour which is a bit different to the bright white photographed on the cover) sand and 200g of bright green sand. The sand colours are separated and within plastic packaging which is fine until the item is used once, there is then no method of keeping the sand contained separately. I would have liked to have seen a simple change of resealable bags for the sand. Even if you choose not to keep the colours separate (or it becomes too tricky to do this following a use), it would ensure the sand is contained further in case the case opens accidently. The set includes three different dinosaur moulds; a green, orange and blue. The sand itself is soft to the touch and feels a cross between typical sand and playdough. It seems to stick together more like wet sand would. I was concerned that the once opened, the sand would dry out however the box clearly states this will not happen, I have not had the item long enough to test, but over the week I have had it open, there doesn’t appear to be any difference in texture at all so hopefully this will continue.
Filling up the moulds is quite simple as long as you are careful to keep both sides together. I think smaller hands however do require some assistance to prevent frustration. The item is advised for the over threes which seems suitable.

It does seem easy to brush up and clean, and much of the mess is contained within the case itself if like us you use this as the dinosaurs land. It also claims to be stain free and so far, I have not had any issues to contradict this so hopefully it is the case. Another point worth noting is that whilst one is brightly coloured, the sand itself is ‘made from natural materials.’

I think compared to the cost of buying alternatives, such as playdough and moulds, this pack seems good value. I liked how within the pack itself, two different coloured sands are included as well as more than one mould, so there is no need to buy extras to make a good gift. Resealable bags would make this pack just a bit more user friendly and practical!

Rating: I would give this product a rating of 3.5 out of 5.
