Our family love a board game, but the type that doesn’t actually have a traditional… well …. board. Within our house we have two storage cupboards dedicated to all the board games we own, so I was excited to try out a new game that had the strap line “liar, liar pants on fire.” So I already feel like this game would be an excellent addition to our collection.
Srirach Ya Problem is created by IDEAL board games who create an array of board games ranging from The 1% Club, Hotel, Think Words, Rummikub. I look in my games cupboard and I have a lot of games from the company. I have always found them to be of great quality and value.
The packaging is bright, colourful and definitely stands out in our games cupboard. It features a window where you can clearly see the bright red squishy Srirach Ya bottle which, while I was reading the instructions, was already being thrown around by my boy and I fear that it could be confiscated before we get started!
The game is pitched as a “fib-finding, bottle-flinging, fired-up party game” and it’s definitely that. There are three sets of cards, mild (green) which are the easier rounds and ones I would recommend if playing the game with kids, hot (orange) which turns up the heat a little bit and then spicy (red) which makes things a lot more spicy but definitely adds to the fun. You choose which spicy level you want or you can mix it up as you are playing.
The instructions are really easy to read and follow, with only 6 steps. It wasn’t made too complex but kinda along the lines of Would I Lie To You, but with some fun and “spicy” questions. It’s the kind of game that once you know the rules, there’s not much more to it, just have fun with your friends and try not to let your face and actions give you away.
What I really liked about the game was that there wasn’t necessarily a liar in play, the liar was always drawn at random and you didn’t know until the end of the round when the Chilli King questions all of the players. There are 10 Truth and 1 Liar tokens that are picked at random at the beginning of the round. Once you’ve established if you’re telling the truth or lying, you need to quickly formulate your lie, create a backstory and prepare yourself for an interrogation. The deeper you go into your lie the harder it is to keep a straight face so, good luck!
You take it in turns to wield the Srirach Ya bottle and be the Chilli King. We found that the power of the bottle did go to our heads as the game went on, at some points wafting it in the air like a judges gavel. The groans from the Chilli King when they forget to shout “Srirach Ya Problem” when they think they have found a liar and they lose the chance to win points, even if they get it right! Ha ha haha!
The game is for 8+ but we were able to play a very relaxed game with our 6 year old, but I must admit it was very difficult as I am a very competitive game player. The game can be played with 3+ players and there’s suggestions for playing with over 13 players. This must get quite rowdy with that many players! We are planning to play this on New Year’s eve when there’s a lot of us. I think it’s going to be an absolute blast! As we are coming up to Christmas, it’s a great game to buy families or couples who like board game nights. I would highly recommend this. It’s a great game together with everyone involved and have a giggle.
