As a family we attempt to do something “Halloweeny” each year. The last few years we’ve done the popular, instagrammable activity of pumpkin picking.
This year we fancied a little change and the Halloween Lakeside Trail didn’t disappoint! We’ve been to a number of light shows over the years and this was definitely one of my favourites.
Parking was well organised and super close to the venue, so it was great for little legs – especially at the end of the night. There is a fee to park, but worth it for the proximity and set up. Staff were there to guide you into the carpark and then to a space.

Walking into the venue itself, the atmosphere was so cosy and autumnal. Upon entry there were large stretch tents decorated with beautiful fairy lights and pumpkins. They provided shelter for the well sized seating area – which proved popular for those wanting to sit down to enjoy their food and drinks (more on that to follow)
Heaters were also dotted around which took away the chill of the crisp October evening.

Stylish fire pits looked out onto the beautiful lake – with a stall selling marshmallows nearby for toasting. They even offered biscuits so that you could make smores – yum!
Other food stalls included pizza, oriental and churros to name a few. A few bars were also dotted about, selling both alcoholic and soft drinks. My personal favourite was the mulled wine – it made the evening feel very festive despite it being Halloween themed, not Christmas! But any excuse for a mulled wine 😉
The access to the show itself was very well organised. There was a queue, but the system was good and we didn’t wait long.
*SPOILER* – in a smallish group we were ushered into a tent where we were told the tragic love story of lonely witch Luna and her true love, Victor. This was a really nice touch that I wasn’t expecting and the theme of the cursed duo followed through the trail itself.
The trail consisted of colourful strobe, rope and projector lights. Smoke. Spooky props and even a bit of live action! All wrapped around the glistening fishery lake which was also beautifully and atmospherically lit.

The live actors were hilarious and great at communicating with the kids (and adults alike!)
Get your cameras ready because there are lots of photo opportunities for those who want them. Queues did tend to build up around these, but all the families were respectful of each other and we all got a turn.
The trail ends with us finding Luna and her cauldron, filled with magic smoke bubbles.
Overall, this was a hit for our family – and I’m looking forward to hopefully attending again next year!
The cost for my family of 3 would come out at over £60 with parking. In these times, that might not be within everyone’s budget. But if it is, I would say that it was worth the price. You can easily spend that pumpkin picking – but this was something different and kept us busy for almost 3 hours by the time we’d eaten, drank and done the trail. Also – Family bundles are available to help keep the cost down for larger families.
Notes: well behaved dogs on leads are allowed on the trail.
Our little boy is 6. It was “spooky” enough but wasn’t scary to him. We saw much younger kids on the trail who were also pleasantly spooked rather than scared.
