Speyburn Whisky Review

Reviewed by Amanda Hayes

If you are looking for a last minute Christmas idea for the whisky lover in your life look no further than the extensive range from Speyburn. Speyburn is a light classic Scotch whisky from Speyburn Distillery, Rothes, Moray, Scotland. Speyside is a region hosting the greatest concentration of malt whisky producers in Scotland with over half of the distilleries being situated there.

I was lucky enough to be sent four samples of the brands finest whisky to try, 10, 15 & 18 year old malt together with Bradan Orach.

Bradan Orach is Gaelic for ‘Golden Salmon’ and that’s the first thing I noticed when I poured it, the very light yellow amber colour. It is matured in ex-bourbon casks which I found gave it a very smooth flavour. It was easy to drink, sweet with a hint of spice on the tongue and a light fruity taste.

The Speyburn 10 year old single malt has a 40% alcohol content and is matured in a combination of American Oak ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks and is slightly darker than the Bradan Orach. When poured, I found the aroma to have a hint of lemon and the taste to be smooth and sweet. This is a good lower end whisky with a really great taste.

The Speyburn 15 year old single malt spends its time maturing in American oak and Spanish oak casks which make it a much darker yellow colour than the previous two. With a 46% alcohol content the flavours are more complex and the aroma stronger and sweeter. The fifteen year old is fairly new addition to the range being introduced in late 2017 and makes a lovely gift as it retails around the fifty pound mark.

The Speyburn 18 year old single malt is the newest addition having just been launched in November. Its super special with a full-bodied flavour tasting of oak and spices. Its more orange than yellow in the glass showcasing the depth of flavours as you pour it out. This is a very special gift retailing around eighty five pounds. If you are a whisky connoisseur you will love it.

Each of the Speyburn whiskies would make a great gift and there is one for every budget. I personally enjoyed the Bradan Orach as it was so light and smooth but for a great gift you couldn’t go wrong with the bold flavours of the 18 year old malt.

Any good off licences will stock Speyside and you can also purchase online. For those of you that are struggling for that last minute gift or already thinking of Valentine ’s Day it is the perfect answer especially as most are gift boxed making it quick and easy to wrap.

Highly recommended.
