Remington Touch Control Beard & Stubble Trimmer Review

Reviewed by Michael McDermott

I must admit that I have never been an everyday shaver, always preferring to spend five more minutes in bed than in front of the bathroom mirror scraping a razor across my face. However, any attempt to alienate myself completely from the tedious world of shaving has never previously lasted more than two weeks. After exactly a fortnight, the stubble growth reaches a length sufficient to create a sensation somewhat akin to wearing the world’s tiniest and itchiest woolly jumper on the face. Indeed, I have been known to leap out of bed at 2am and make a mad grab for my razor when I can stand the itching no more. It therefore seemed that it would never be my destiny to hold my chin up proudly in the world of beardy men until, that is, the Remington Beard & Stubble Trimmer came my way.

This rechargeable little gizmo (both a mains adaptor and USB cable are supplied) presents an attractive and ergonomic form factor and offers Remington’s Touch Control interface which requires just a feather-light dab of the finger to activate the beard length controls. Once this mechanism has been unlocked via a slider switch on the side, the internal motor purrs into life and the comb retracts or extends to the desired cutting length. This information is displayed via a dinky digital readout that shows the exact length in fractions of a mm, ranging from a 5 o’clock shadow – some 0.4mm to the full Captain Birdseye at 18mm. The aforementioned display also indicates the battery charge level and the locked/unlocked status of the motorised comb. Just remember to lock the latter before beginning trimming or else one touch of the sensor controls will cause an amusing mid-shave change in the trimming length!

In action, I started off by setting the length to a point where no cutting occurred then worked my way down in 0.5mm increments until a light trim was achieved, thus determining the point just below the itchy-beard threshold mentioned above. This Remington proved to be a pleasure to use and so much quicker, easier and whole lot less messy than a full wet shave. The only factor that may deter those who have used similar kit before is that the Remington cannot be cleaned in water, instead a small brush is supplied to enable this. To this end, the motorised comb section slides off easily for cleaning to be achieved without any notable fuss or nonsense.

In conclusion, this is a tasty man toy that promises to keep even bushier facial furniture in good shape and, for this user, has opened the door to membership of the beardy club I thought I may never be consistently hairy enough to join.
