Capsule Chix Review

Reviewed by Louise Totton

My kids are in love with mystery bag toys at the moment – actually, I think pretty much every child in the world love them, and we have been having a great time recently trying a few of them out ready for Christmas. Mystery bag toys and packaging seem to be getting more and more sophisticated too – if you think about it, the first mystery toys were probably Kinder Eggs, and they were literally a plastic pod with a toy inside. Now, though, as well as more substantial and collectable toys, the presentation and the way the toys are dispensed are becoming real selling points too!

We have been having a wonderful time this weekend trying out Capsule Chix toys, which combine three things that most kids love – mystery bags, building and customising their ‘winnings’, and vending machines! The box that the Capsule Chix come in are actually functioning, mechanical vending machines, and each toy is made up of five different capsules, all contained in the vending machine. The series consists of four different ranges of fashion dolls – Sweet Circuits, Ram Rocks, Giga Glam and CTRL+ALT+MAGIC, with each range having its own unique style.

RAM Rock come in yellow vending boxes and are: “fashion on the edge with black, pops of colour and studded details! You’ll be ready to rock-out anytime, anywhere!”

Sweet Circuits come in pink vending boxes and are: “fashion that’s all about Bold Candy Brights and Sugary Coatings! Style it up to make fashion that’s sweet enough to eat!”

Giga Glam come in purple vending boxes and are: “fashion that’s all about all about the Sparkle and being over dressed for any occasion with metallics and glitter in every colour!”

CTRL+ALT+MAGIC come in turquoise vending boxes and are: “pastels, iridescents and fashions with a fantasy twist are what make this collection a fashion must have!”

The boxes that they come in are great fun and the kids were desperate to get stuck in and start vending their toys! We were lucky enough to be sent one box from each range, so the kids shared them out and had two boxes each – they just went with their favourite colours, so my eldest had the purple Giga Glam and turquoise CTRL+ALT+MAGIC, and the youngest had the pink Sweet Circuits and yellow Ram Rocks.

The Capsule Chix box has a plastic dial on the front, and it works in a similar way to lots of toy vending machines – the dial is twisted and a little egg or capsule pops out of a door at the bottom of the machine. To use these ones, we had to punch out the perforated ‘door’, where we found a Capsule Chix guide, featuring all of the different dolls that are available in the range – after all, all good mystery bag toys have a checklist so you can keep track of what you have collected!

After punching out the door, all you have to do is twist the plastic dial, and one-by-one, the five capsules are dispensed out of the door. There are fifteen items spread between the five capsules, and they allow you to build your dolls bit by bit. The first thing that I would say is that these aren’t the super-cheap, static dolls – not by any stretch of the imagination! When the dolls have been built, they each have 14 points of articulation, so they can be moved and posed from most of their joints.

The dolls all have a fabulous and futuristic look – the girls both thought that that looked really trendy and cool. The dolls all clip together really securely too, and have a substantial and good quality feel to them. Whilst they’re not self-standing, one of the things that we really loved was that the bottom part of the capsules turned into a stand for them, so the kids can line up their new dolls on their bedside tables.

Whilst the dolls clip together very securely, this doesn’t mean that they’re permanently connected – half of the fun with these dolls is that you can mix and match all of the body parts (not just the clothes) throughout all of the ranges in the series. Between the four style ranges, there are over 400 pieces to collect (faces, hair, arms and legs, torso as well as clothing and accessories) and you get around 15 in each box, which makes for a staggering 4 billion different combinations of doll!

We have had fantastic fun with these dolls – the kids have loved opening them, building them and swapping bits around to create their perfect combination. As with lots of these kinds of toys, the more products you have, and the more combinations you can make, the more fun the concept is. These are great fun, and at around £15 each, they make a good mid-priced Christmas gift for aunties and uncles to get as a lovely surprise. For kids who love the mystery bag concept, as well as creating unique styles and outfits, they’re an ideal pressie!
