This was my first visit to the Lowry in probably 10 years. A stark difference from the old theatres I have been to recently, the Lyric theatre in the Lowry is modern, spacious and most importantly, it’s the only theatre in the world where, as a woman, I haven’t had to queue for the toilet!
My top tip for multi-storey parking is; validate your ticket in a shop (I bought a coffee) in the mall before you go to the theatre to get 4 hours of free parking (you can’t validate it in the theatre), otherwise it’s about a fiver.
Anyway enough about the parking, what about the show I hear you cry?
Soul Legends is a group of very talented musicians and singers who perform many popular soul tracks from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. The three main men (wearing rather large suits) open the show and are joined by their ‘bond style girl’ singers and dancers. The auditorium is awash with middle aged plus groovers who are a little reserved in their seat dancing to start with, but by the fifth song, rise to the occasion and populate the aisles in their dozens. We were then treated to an hour of fabulous songs including Chaka Khan ’I feel for you’, George Benson ‘Give me the night’ and Kool and the Gang ‘Get down on it’.
The second half was even more energetic as the main singer of Rose Royce, Gwen Dickey was wheeled into the stage and remained seated throughout her outstanding performance due to a foot injury. She sang ‘wishing on a star’ beautifully as well as the ‘best danced to’ song of the night ‘Car Wash’ and ‘Love don’t live here anymore’. More magic of Motown erupted and the whole audience was on their feet dancing the night away until the end. The encore was a medley of songs, with the happy crowd chanting ‘Soulful Salford’ after a standing ovation.
A great night, great venue and a great buzz.
