The Spitfire pub is a new addition to Southampton having only opened its doors in early July 2014. Situated just north of the main shopping precinct in Southampton and close to the Southampton Guildhall it is ideally situated for those wishing to stop for a bite to eat after a shopping trip or for those making a start to their night out.
The pub has been refurbished well and can seat 156 guests. There is a good variety of seating from cosy booths, high tables and stools and tables with bucket chairs and large folding windows can be opened up when the weather is nice. I was particularly impressed with the attention to detail as throughout the pub are canvasses and framed pictures showing images associated to Southampton such as images of the iconic Queen Elizabeth and pictures of the Southampton walls.
The Spitfire has a great selection of food available on the menu all of which is reasonably priced. Thursday is grill club and for under £10 you can enjoy a classic mixed grill of rump steak, gammon steak, sausages, chicken breast, chips and a grilled tomato washed down with a drink which can include a draught pint, wine or even a spirit with a mixer. The main menu is full of choice from pub classics, burgers and a selection of sizzling dishes. The menu is well laid out and those dishes which are vegetarian are clearly labelled along with dishes which contain less than 700 calories.
The Spitfire also caters for children with plenty of highchairs available and a good choice of dishes on the menu. This menu is value for money as all main dishes only cost £2.99 and £4.50 if you add a drink and a pudding. As a parent I did notice a small display of pictures on the wall which had been coloured in by children and thought it was a lovely touch which continued to add to the character of the pub.
As with all Sizzling Pubs once you have decided on your food you place your order at the bar and wait for your food at your table. The service from the staff was prompt, each member whom I spoke with was extremely pleasant and well presented.
The food did not disappoint either. Unable to decide upon which starter to have we made the decision to try the sharing platter. This platter could easily be shared out amongst 3-4 people and included nachos, onion rings, garlic bread, chicken wings, breaded chicken strips, garlic mushroom with a selection of dips. Judging by the fact that we managed to finish it all showed that we enjoyed every individual element of this dish.
For our main course we tried the classic mixed grill, sizzling chicken fajitas and a BBQ stacker burger. The mixed grill was the first of our mains to arrive and I was a little jealous that I had not ordered it when it arrived. The grilled meat selection was stacked on top of a bed of onions and the plate was sizzling so much that it did manage to capture the attention of the adjacent table. The fajitas and the BBQ stacker burger did not disappoint either. Each dish was well presented, full of flavour and cooked to perfection.
At the time or ordering I was fully intending to order something from the desert menu. This part of the menu again was full of choice however, after enjoy our large main courses I simply could not eat another thing.
The service throughout our time was excellent. The staff were quick to clear away empty plates and glasses, customers at the bar were served in good time and if there was ever a queue at the bar another member of staff would appear to help serve them. Each member of staff helped serve food, clear away and serve at the bar. They were efficient, pleasant and approachable and added to the good atmosphere of this pub.
The Spitfire has a lot to offer. With good food available at affordable prices and the pub itself projecting a friendly laid back atmosphere this is somewhere where I would come back to time and time again. With a large selection of food on offer I certainly need to return again and I know I would feel at ease bringing my three young children with me. A place I would recommended to all my friends I would give The Spitfire 5 out 5.
