Last night we went to see ‘The Bodyguard’ at Sheffield Lyceum theatre. We arrived in good time, there are plenty of car parks around to park in.., although try and park in Q Park (cheese grater car park) as the theatre has car park vouchers for 1 hour free. Some other car parks nearby are very expensive. On arrival the staff we spoke to were very friendly and helpful. The whole theatre was clean, well-lit and provided tannoy information about how long until performance time which was very useful, especially for a last minute toilet dash.

The performance stared Alexandra Burke of X-Factor fame. I had always watched The Bodyguard film as a child several times, so I was very excited to see how the stage production would turn out and see if it would meet my expectations, I was not disappointed.

Well it started with a bang… literally as a gunshot sounded making everyone jump in the auditorium. The scenes moved quickly with lots of set changes and Alexandra made several costume changes. The singing was fantastic as was how they told the story. Alexandra plays Rachel Marran a successful singer who is stalked and has death threats from a mystery guy. She employs a bodyguard they get close and he ends up protecting her but not without consequences for her sister and upset for her son. The first half passed quickly as I was hooked in the story. The second half was even better.

Alexandra Burke was phenomenal, a true talent. The storyline worked on stage as well as in a film. There were opportunities for audience participation which most people did, clapping and singing along. Lots of laughter moments too. The whole cast were brilliant, the young actor playing fletcher (her son), the sister (stunning voice) and The Bodyguard all had amazing performances. At the end when Alexandra sung she was on a raised platform that lifted her up. She then got a standing ovation from the audience, it was such a powerful piece. Then all the cast sung I Wanna Dance With Somebody and the whole theatre were clapping, singing along and dancing away, an absolutely fantastic atmosphere.

This was an amazing show, fantastic production with Alexandra Burke providing amazing vocals, a great fun night. I would highly recommend to anyone.
