Shea Moisture Bath and Body Products Review

Reviewed by Melody Floyde

I always like trying out new beauty products, although I very rarely buy them for myself, so it was a real treat to be asked to try out two products from the Shea Moisture Bath and Body range.

I had never heard of Shea Moisture before so was interested to find out about the brand. From a quick visit to the website I learned that the company roots go back to 1912 when an ancestor of the company founders started selling Shea Nuts at the local market in her village in Sierra Leone, as well as selling her homemade hair and skin preparations around the countryside. Shea Moisture remains a family owned company today and they have continued this tradition. They use only natural ingredients in their products and the shea butter is organic and fair trade. There are also no additives such as sulfates, parabens, paraffin, mineral oil or synthetic colour in the products. I really liked the sound of this ethos so was very keen to try the products.

Firstly, I tried the Raw Shea Butter Hydrating Body Wash with Frankincense and Myrrh. This immediately evoked thoughts of Christmas which made the product feel even more of a treat. The label told me that this body wash was good for dry skin and that the shea butter and other ingredients would deeply moisturise my skin, leaving it soft and radiant. I tried the body wash out in the shower, it was very easy to lather and apply to my skin using my hands. I really liked the smell of the frankincense and myrrh which was delicate and not overpowering, but left my skin with a slight fragrance afterwards. My skin felt really clean after using the body wash and I was very impressed. I also only needed to use a small amount of the product so the large (384ml) bottle will last for a long time. It has a 12-month shelf life once opened.

Secondly, I tried the Raw Shea Butter Hydrating Body Lotion with Frankincense and Myrrh which is also designed for dry skin, especially for areas such as feet, knees and heels which tend to be extra dry. Like the body wash this smelt lovely, with a delicate fragrance so it wasn’t overpowering. It was a thick creamy texture which rubbed in easily to my skin. I have been using it on my heels, which need a bit of tender loving care having been neglected since the summer, and after a few days have already started to notice an improvement. Like the body wash a little goes a long way with this body lotion and the large (384ml) bottle will last a long time and has a shelf life of 12-months after opening.

I have really enjoyed using these products and would highly recommend them. I also really like the simple and elegant packaging of both products, and was impressed with the amount of information given on the labels. I was glad to see that the bottles were made of part recycled ingredients and they can be recycled themselves when empty. Having never heard of Shea Moisture previously I will definitely be keen to try out some of their other products in the future.
