Scrivner for Men Kit Bag Review

Reviewed by Alexis Randall

I’m a complete novice to skin care. So much so, that my previous daily routine was a bar of soap and a good scrub. This was all about to change…

Scrivner for Men was launched on the 1st November 2019 by Jane Scrivner after she saw a rise in men borrowing (stealing) the products of their respective others to use on their own faces. It would seem men’s face care has really taken off lately and this set of products is clearly geared towards those who are new to the game. I received five products in total, all of which arrived in a cotton bag with easy to follow instructions. The instructions are also listed on the bottles with the step numbers on as well. Trust me, I’m the kind of man that needs things to be numbered or I’d just stick it all in a bowl and rub it on my face.

They included a cotton mitt to wash off the balm from step 1 which felt like exactly the right kind of rough and soft blend to do what it needed to do whilst not irritating the skin while cleaning.

The five products I received were as follows:

Skin Clean 100ml, Nourish Enrich Cleansing Balm

Made from the sweat of Gods, or possibly a blend of Jojoba oil and Rice Bran wax with Vitamin E, this balm offers everything your skin ever wanted and more. You can apply this pre, post or during your shave and it’s an incredibly versatile product. Because I have a beard, I chose to apply this as a shaving balm on the bottom of my neck and my cheeks. I could have used a shaving cream over the top, but I chose not to because I simply didn’t need to. The shave was smooth and easy, and it didn’t leave my razor clogged up and sticky. There was absolutely no irritation afterwards and my skin felt softer and didn’t have the redness usually associated with shaving. You only need a penny sized amount for your whole face and afterwards you clean the remaining balm with a supplied mitt before drying your face gently. Frankly, I’m amazed by how good this felt. Shaving has always been a bit of a chore for me, but this balm made it not just easy, but enjoyable. It smells amazing as well as doing what it is meant to do. I love this and will definitely be incorporating it into my shaving routine.

Exfoliate 150ml, Daily Resurfacing AHA/BHA Acid Exfoliator

What, wait? There’s more? Yes, there is. After your skin is baby smooth and fresh from the shave it’s time to dispense this onto some cotton wool. This product is a liquid and pours onto a cotton wool pad before being applied to your face. As the name suggests it has acid in it (I’m assuming it’s one of the good acids…) And wow, you can feel it working. It says to apply 2-3 times a week at first before building up to make it part of your daily cleansing routine. A small amount goes a very long way and I’m slightly embarrassed to say, my cotton wool pad was pretty grey afterwards. You could really see the dirt that this exfoliator drew from my skin. You can feel at little sting at first but not in an unpleasant way, more that you can feel it working. I don’t really know how this magic works, but you could see a difference in the cleanliness of my skin straight away. It was a little red after first using it, but then I expected that given what it’s for and my skin felt and looked cleaner than it’s ever done.

Skin Hydrate 50g, Soothing Hyaluronic Hydrating Gel

The hydrating gel feels like a drink for your skin. It wasn’t greasy and spread easily across my face. The instructions say to use until it has dried down, this didn’t take long, 30 seconds at best and I was amazed at how effective this was. It cooled my face down after the previous steps and felt incredible. I’ve not had the best experience with anything moisturising. It usually consists of me rubbing for ages and having to spread it out on my arms and legs as it never gets absorbed. This was different, it really felt like it was making a difference and you could see the results as well. Currently this is the first step in my daily cleansing routing both morning and night until I can use the Acid Exfoliator daily as well. It works well and I didn’t realise how much my skin needed it until I started using it.

Skin Defence 30ml, Calm Nourish Enrich Face Oil

So, you’ve done most of the hard work and this step continues in protecting your skin against all the things that are trying to destroy it. Seriously, I looked it up and it’s like everything is waging a war on your face. The sun, wind, car exhausts, even water! It’s a wonder we have any skin left at all. I was a little sceptical of this oil at first, wrongly believing that after the gel step above my skin wouldn’t want to take anything else. Turns out I was completely mistaken. This oil can be applied to your beard hair as well so even the skin under the beard gets the pamper treatment. I’ve not used it for long enough to say what the long-term effects are, but short term, my beard feels softer and smells good enough to lick. It’s a really warm scent and perfect for these winter months.

Oat & Argan Moisturising Cream 50ml

As the title suggests, this final step locks in everything you’ve just done and prepares it for the day ahead. Not only does it get absorbed easily it smells just as good, if not better, than all of the other products you’ve just used. Apparently, it forms a film that protects your skin against environmental factors, and whilst I can’t see it, I can certainly feel it. I can’t say I’ve ever smelled “Argan” before, nor could I tell you what it looks like, but I like it. A lot! The container is huge compared to the amount you need to use and it’s clearly going to last some time.

You may not know it yet, but you need these products in your life. The smells, the feeling, the look, it all comes together to produce something amazing. Whilst researching for this review I also found that Jane Scrivner has completed a professional perfumers course which means she knows her stuff and you can really tell that the knowledge that has come from her female range has been applied here and made these products and instant winner. It’s not too late to buy for Christmas and you need to get out there today and find some. If you can’t tell how much I love it then I’d be happy to let you come and smell me. It has completely transformed the way I look after my skin and my cleansing routing will never be the same.
