What an excellent show I had the good fortune to review on 19th July 2018, at Ferneham Hall in Fareham! This was such a well-organised show by Roy G Hemmings, a former member of the legendary group, The Drifters. Over two wonderful hours of Motown Hits!
The show featured a six-piece band ‘The Dictionary of Soul Band’, an extremely competent group of musicians. They consisted of a keyboard player, drummer, lead guitarist, bass guitarist, saxophonist and trumpet player. Providing female vocals were three lady singers, ‘The Love Supremes’ who began the show; singing a few well know Motown numbers to get the audience warmed up before the introduction of the exceptional main vocalist Roy G Hemmings. Each vocalist took the lead in songs suited to their particular vocal range; whilst also harmonising together beautifully. These ladies had three costume changes; with sparkly dresses showing off their well-choreographed routines.
The show featured some of the classic Motown hits, by The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Drifters and Stevie Wonder to name but a few. Songs such as ‘Dancing In The Street’, ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, ‘My Girl’, ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’, ‘Heatwave’, ‘Under The Boardwalk’, ‘There Goes My Baby’, ‘Saturday Night At The Movies’ and ‘Stand By Me’ were enthusiastically received by a very happy audience. Roy G Hemmings was a great compere, interacting well with the audience.
Two hours flew by as song after song were showcased; the audience dancing, clapping and singing along to the well-known hits. This was actively encouraged by the singers and the band – to enhance the feel-good factor of the evening. Their polished performances certainly deserved the delighted response of the audience. Every Motown hit was recognised; it was impossible not to sing along or tap your feet!
An excellent show; thoroughly recommended, with a 5-star rating. Hopefully this show will return again to Ferneham Hall in 2019. I shall certainly attend again and will heartedly recommend this show to my friends and family
