As we drove past the theatre the queue was nearly around the block! Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow was organised and opened the door to chattering, excited and some dressed in outfits made for Halloween, but this is the norm of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Our lives as we knew them were about to be taken into a ‘time warp’.
The auditorium was full but within seconds of the lights dimming a silence of anticipation fell; then Roxy (Natasha Hoeberigs) in her usherette’s uniform came on stage and the audiences’ comments started. It is ridiculously hard not to sing along, some do, but I would be escorted out being tone deaf.
Brad (Connor Carson) and Janet (Lauren Chia) on their way home from a party, take a wrong turn, their vehicles tyre bursts and the once clear skies has turned dark, scary and electrifying. They had noticed a castle a little way off and go in the hopes of using the phone. This evening would either give them nightmares or memories that last a life time.
Narrator, Nathan Caton who owned the stage, took every insult thrown his way, and even threw them back, stood tall strong as he tried to tell the story. He was clever with his words and used up to date news stories, some of which seemed to bring a blank from the audience but it didn’t stop them boldly heckling through the story.
Sadly, Jason Donovan was not our Frank N Furter but Stephen Wells did not disappoint. He definitely owned the stage as he entered with his minions around him. He had a powerful singing voice, and his control of his cape giving glimpses of his under attire was eaten up by the audience.
Riff Raff (Job Greuter) popped up in many places you least expected, his sister Magenta (Natasha Hoeberigs) kept his story right when he slipped up. I did feel that Magenta was pushed back into the scenery more this time around and wasn’t quite as vibrant as I remember. Now, Columbia (Jayme-Lee Zanoncelli) was just WOW. She was the tiniest in size, but she had the most powerful voice, her outfit was bright and I want to see more of her in musicals as she stole my heart.
We can’t forget Rocky (Morgan Jackson) Frank N Furter’s latest creation, a perfect man, wearing tight leopard print pants, his physique was eye popping and you could hardly look elsewhere as he flexed those muscles. He was clean and fresh with a look of innocence that was about to be corrupted.
The production team got everything perfect; from the glittery curtains to the quick changing scenes from roadside and the castle and as they went in the door they arrived in a hall. It was smooth clever and everything flowed with ease. The costumes were flattering and showed the era in which it was set. I especially loved the twirl of the dresses.
This show never gets stale, if you have seen in once, you will probably want to go again. If you haven’t seen it yet… don’t wait! A classic that will always leave you feeling your best; with those rock n roll songs replaying in your head for days to come.
