We have a lovely 7 year old Labrador, who still behaves like a puppy a lot of the time. Similar to other dog owners, we love spoling her to bits, but as she has a tendency to destroy toys very quickly, we don’t tend to buy the more expensive toys anymore. They simply don’t seem to be worthwhile, as she destroys them as quick as she does the cheaper toys. We were very excited to be chosen to review the Petsafe Electronic Dog Toy, as it is not something we would have bought ourselves.

The concept behind this is simply brilliant. Two large toys, shaped like big eggs, are paired with each other via bluetooth. When your dog plays with one of the toys, the other one starts to squeak. The toys need to be within 9 metres of each other.

We couldn’t wait for the toy to arrive, and immediately set it up with the required batteries. Both takes 3 x AAA batteries. The batteries are put in an enclosed case, so it felt quite safe and inaccessible to the dog.

We gave her the toys and it was an absolute delight watching her being very goofy and confused. The toys, however, are very large, so she found it hard to pick up even though she is a large dog. They are also quite heavy, and as we have hard floors, it made it a bit uncomfortable to listen to.

She played for quite a while with these, and I am not sure who had more fun; her, me or my children. As interactive toys go, these are just a brilliant idea.

Although we always supervise her when she plays, I very much doubt that she will be able to destroy these. They seem sturdy and durable. That said, because they are so large, and one side of them has a silicone like cover, there were a few times when we weren’t sure if she was just holding it or whether she couldn’t let go. As it is supervised only, this luckily wasn’t a big problem either way.

She seems excited every time we take this out of her toy box, so she obviously loves it. She doesn’t stay interested in it for more than a few minutes at a time though. I think it might be because of how heavy and big they are, as she is unable to toss them around.

Overall, we love the concept, the toy seems extremely durable. It works well. On the negative side, they simply seem to large and heavy. I would however recommend it to friends with large, boisterous dogs as I can imagine it might be ideal for them.

The Ricochet Toys can be found at Amazon and several other stores. Note that the AAA batteries (6) are not included.

I’m glad we got to review this toy, and even though it has not been one of my dog’s favourite toys, it is still a thumbs up from us.
