There are few things in life more relaxing than a long hot bath and bath salts are the perfect way to make your bath even better. Westlab is an award winning brand whose aim is to make premium quality natural mineral products accessible to all for everyday life. I had the pleasure of trying out two different products from them – Magnesium Flakes and Sleep Bath Salts (Epsom and Dead Sea Mineral Salts with Lavender, Jasmine & Valerian).
Westlab was founded by two childhood friends Scott Livingston and Penny Hamilton after they realised how good bath salts were at soothing their children’s eczema-prone skin. They are now the UK’s No. 1 trusted mineral salts brand and have won Best Bath product at Glamour Beauty Powerlist Award for the last two years running.
The Westlab mineral products arrived quickly and in a large cardboard box. Both products were in 1kg plastic bags which are 100% recyclable. The packaging is simple but effective and the top is resealable. The Sleep Bath Salts are made up of fine grains and smell of the Jasmine and Lavender whereas the magnesium flakes are a larger size and don’t really smell of anything.
I tried the Sleep Bath Salts just before going to bed. These are a 100% natural blend of mineral-rich Epsom and Dead Sea Salts, infused with Jasmine, Lavender and Valerian. Epsom Salts are made up of magnesium, sulfur and oxygen whereas the Dead Sea Salts are made of up about 60% magnesium and potassium and are beneficial in softening and soothing dry itchy skin. The Jasmine and Lavender help to calm and soothe the senses, and the Valerian helps to promote deep, peaceful sleep. I put in two large handfuls (which is what is recommended) and this fully dissolved into the warm water. The bath was very calming and the smell of the salts was really soothing and reminded me of being at a spa. Afterwards I felt very relaxed and I did fall asleep incredibly quickly.
The magnesium flakes can be used as either a foot or body soak and you can add the magnesium flakes alongside other bath salts or oils.
Did you know? Magnesium is an essential mineral to our health, being required by the body for over 300 processes including muscle relaxation and sleep support. But It is not produced by the body, so needs constant replenishment to maintain optimum levels.
I added 100g (just under a cup) to my warm bath but it does say on the packaging that if you don’t bathe regularly, then you may prefer to have a more intense transdermal magnesium bath with 500g-1kg (2-4 cups) once a week. I soaked in the bath for around 20 minutes (which is what it says on the package) and although I didn’t feel as noticeably relaxed after as I had with the SLEEP bath salts iit was still a lovely calming bath.
There is a huge selection of bath salts, muscle sprays and shower washes on their website including himalayan bath salts, an epsom muscle spray and a dead sea shower wash. All their products are 100% cruelty free and 100% vegan and their products are mostly 100% natural (and never contain less than 97% naturally derived ingredients). On their website they also have a wellness blog which has articles such as how to encourage a positive mindset in the year ahead.
I really liked both products but am especially impressed with the SLEEP bath salts. £7.99 for 1kg (so enough for around 10 baths) is great value, they smell amazing and every time I’ve used them I feel calmer and more relaxed.
You get the feeling both with the products and with the website that this is a company that cares and as a result this is a brand that I would trust and would recommend to others.
