Last night I went to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert at Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield and what an amazing night it was! It must be the most fun I have ever had on a Monday night and I didn’t stop smiling and laughing throughout the whole performance!

We had seats in the stalls, row L23 and 24 which on the whole had a good view although a little of the left side of the stage was obscured by the speakers. The performance started just after 7.45pm with a flamboyant upbeat overture and very quickly we meet one of the stars of the show, Tick (played by Jason Donovan) a drag queen working in a club in Sydney who after receiving a phone call from his wife decides to take a trip from Sydney to the Australian outback to meet his son. Together with his two friends, the transsexual Bernadette (played by Simon Green) and a young excitable drag queen Felicia (played by Adam Bailey) they set out on an amazing adventure in their camper van called Priscilla, meeting new people, including some with a less accepting attitude of their lifestyles than others.

The whole show was outstanding from beginning to end, there were great classic disco songs including Hot Stuff, Venus and I Will Survive. The costumes and make up effects were absolutely incredible and some of the more elaborate costume creations included people dressed as paintbrushes, cupcakes and a dress made out of sandals! The show was packed with humour and the time just whizzed by. There aren’t enough words really for me to express just what a magnificent show this truly this. All of the cast were just excellent throughout the performance and received a well-earned standing ovation at the end of the show.

The theatre is conveniently located in the centre of Sheffield with various bars and eateries in the surrounding areas. The theatre itself has a very modern look from the outside yet still retains the charm and characteristics of an old theatre once inside. There was a good amount of leg room in the stall seating area. Toilets and bar areas are well signposted and the building was clean throughout.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert is a must see!
