With the new school year fast approaching, planning for the new term has started including buying new uniform, shoes and not forgetting healthy snacks for break time. Having fallen foul of the school rules around snacks a few times in the past, it’s hard to find snacks which are tasty and appealing to children that also meet the strict requirements. When I was asked to review some Pipsticks I was very happy to help as they could be the ideal solution.

Pip Organic is an award-winning organic food and drink company selling a range of healthy fruit snacks and drinks aimed at children and families. It was set up by a husband and wife, who started out by selling organic fruit juices in a market in London. Pip Organic promises that their products are made from 100% organically grown fruit with no added sugar, GM free and suitable for vegans which makes them appealing for parents as they are a tasty treat for children whilst being healthy.

We have tried a few of the Pip Organic products over the years, mainly smoothies and ice lollies, which we often find on sale in cafes and restaurants on our trips. These have always gone down very well with the children and are very tasty.

Pipsticks are organic dried fruit sticks which come in Mango and Mango & Pineapple flavours. They are available to buy on the Pip Organic website in cases of 24 Pip Sticks for £19.99 which works out at about 83p per item. We were sent a box of each flavour to try along with some smaller retail boxes containing four Pipsticks each which can be purchased from supermarkets including Waitrose and Ocado. Pipsticks are suitable for children aged 36 months and above. The website says that all of the packaging used for the Pipsticks is recyclable (although not all councils, including our local council, will take the wrappers yet).

The retail boxes were very colourful and attractive, they had fun fruity characters on the boxes which would make them appealing to children. The individually wrapped fruit sticks weighing 18g each, were also brightly coloured and featured different fruity characters. The sticks are made from 100% organic fruit either 100% mango, or 100% mango and pineapple. There were no other added ingredients such as sugar, sweeteners or sulphites making them a healthy choice for a snack. Each stick also accounts for 1 of your 5 a day and have between 55-58 calories in them. These would be a great healthy snack to put in children’s lunch boxes or to keep in the cupboard at home for a quick snack. They would also be easy to pop into a bag when going out on trips to keep hungry children happy.

My children were keen to try the Pipsticks and their verdict was that they were “pretty good”. The sticks were tasty and easy to eat. Both agreed that Mango was their favourite flavour. My children are used to having other similar dried fruit products and said that the Pipsticks compared well in taste but both felt that they were a bit smaller in size than other similar products.

Overall, I found the Pipsticks to be good quality and tasty, they would make a nice healthy treat for children for school and will encourage them to eat fruit in an appealing product which are much more transportable than fruit on its own. The Pipsticks do seem to be slightly more expensive compared to some other similar products on the market, but they are a quality organic product so this counteracts the higher price to some extent. It would be great to see additional flavours of Pipsticks in the future as they are a great product.
