Paperino’s enjoys a fantastic location right at the heart of Glasgow’s West End, and it only takes a few minutes inside its bustling environs to see they’ve fully capitalised on its potential as a hub for the local community.

It’s only 4.30pm on a dreary midweek night, but already the place is filling up with students in for a post-lecture feed, a pre-teen’s birthday meal with friends and couples taking advantage of the tastily priced and tastefully presented early evening menu.

With its relaxed but slick and professional feel, this stalwart of the Italian scene in Scotland’s number one city pulls off that rare trick of being a lot of things to a lot of people, and doing it all with a smile on its face.

After warming up with a nice glass of San Giovese, we went for the calamari and pizza sticks to start. Each would easily have made a meal in itself, the portions as generous as the flavours were impressive.

Even bigger and better was to come as the waiting staff wheeled out quite possibly the biggest pizzas in the west. We sampled both the Cajun chicken and the Parma, Rucola e Parmigiano and loved the big bold tastes in each. The Cajun chicken was lovely and moist, compared to the limp, dry version other eateries sometimes seem to be content with.

Purely in the interests of research, we loosened our belts and managed to find room for a huge bowl of ice cream apiece. Diligent to the last, we sampled all the flavours on offer, with the salted caramel and cappuccino drawing particular praise.

A quick shot of espresso ensured we were just about awake enough to manage the walk home after a frankly wonderful feed.

Friendly, attentive staff and lovingly prepared food: it’s clear to see why it’s always busy.
