Spaghetti House Review

Spaghetti House

St Martin’s Lane, London

Reviewed by Shelley East

I must admit I’m quite sceptical with Italian restaurants. I think I have only ever been for two meals in an Italian restaurant and have walked away thinking "what was so special about that?" I cook a lot at home with pasta and my home made lasagne would have Gino di Campo smacking his lips together for more. Little did I know or expect that I was in for a little treat dining in the Spaghetti House situated right in the heart of the theatre district of London.

Now I know what true Italian hospitality is after dining here! Quite often when dining out I feel like I am just a table number but the manager and his team located in our dining area was superb. They took the time to explain the menu and ask what our preferences were. I ordered the Bocconcini Di Pollo which was a corn fed chicken starter dish. The chicken had been coated in pangrattato and was served with an arrabbiata sauce. My partner ordered a spicy dish containing prawns again that came in a sauce. We indulged in Pane All'Aglio which was a toasted panino with garlic butter with thick slices of melting Italian mozzarella. I dipped the corn-fed chicken in the sauce and also dipped the garlic bread in too. My taste buds were having a party in my mouth!

For my main course I wanted to stick to a traditional Italian dish; again one that I have made at home to compare my own cooking and that of a previous order in another Italian restaurant. My plate was piled high with spaghetti tossed in infused olive oil, folded into cream and smoked pancetta with freshly grated parmesan. It was absolutely delicious and was very surprised at the large portion size. My partner decided to be more adventurous than me and ordered the Scaloppa Napoli which was slow fried veal escalope coated in seasoned pangrattato served with a bed of spaghetti and Napoli sauce. The dish was very hearty and my partner thoroughly enjoyed his meal commenting the meat was cooked perfectly and the flavours were delightful.

I did not have room for dessert but my partner’s favourite dessert is Tiramisu. He was eager to have a dessert so I happily watched him tuck in whilst drinking an Italian coffee. All our dishes were perfectly presented and tasted delicious. The coffee was freshly ground and very aromatic. I enjoyed it immensely.

We sampled the traditional lemon liqueur after our meal called Limoncello. This was a first for me. It was served cold in a small liqueur glass and cleansed my palate with not too much zest. I love the Italian way of dining out!

I felt completely at home as if I was dining amongst friends and the team of waiters working that evening as well as the restaurant manager all have excellent interpersonal skills and are extremely warm and knowledgeable on the menu and ingredients.

The wine list is fabulous and the manager was able to help us choose a wine to complement our meal.

I can highly recommend the Spaghetti House to anyone wanting to meet up with friends of an evening, a definite perfect pre theatre meal and of course somewhere to take the ladies to impress them with the relaxing atmosphere. With candles on our table and low lighting I found the whole ambience very romantic. The food is delicious and the staff are warm and inviting. I just have to give the Spaghetti House 10/10!!
