Oak Fair at Stock Gaylard

Countryside, Conservation and Woodcraft and a whole lot of woodland fun in the heart of Dorset

www.stockgaylard.co.uk

Now in its eighth year, the Oak Fair at Stock Gaylard near Sherborne in Dorset, will be held on Saturday, 25 August 2012 – in the wonderful natural setting of Dorset countryside and woodland.

Bringing together a talented and eclectic mix of woodland workers, from woodcarvers to stick-makers, wood-turners to furniture makers, around every corner there is someone who is ready to stop whittling away and talk about their love of the countryside.  The Oak Fair is about playing in amongst the trees, watching giant ‘wood-eating’ machines, seeing planks being shaped to make a table or bench or traditional toys being created from blocks of wood.

The much loved event is held within the mature Oak parkland on the Stock Gaylard estate and the 160+ exhibits are guaranteed to absorb every member of the family; from woodcarving to pole lathe turning, rustic to fine furniture, sculptures to toys, chopping boards to huge platters, chipping machines to mobile sawmills and garden furniture to green timber buildings.

Attractions this year include a dramatic chainsaw carving demonstration by The Tree Pirates, logging techniques from the Heavy Horse Loggers, and a children’s area where scarecrows can be built and mazes mastered.  There is also a food market of South West food producers, falconry displays, tractor rides, tree climbing and a workshop in circus skills.

Background Information
The Stock Gaylard Estate has not been sold since 1585 and is well known locally for the herd of light coloured Fallow deer that can be seen clearly from the road.

It has a traditional “air” to it with the large house and ground supported by three tenant farms and some in hand farming.
