From the moment the curtain rose at Curve Theatre Leicester, “Here You Come Again” had the audience utterly captivated. This 5 out of 5 performance was nothing short of spellbinding, blending theatrical brilliance with musical excellence in a way that kept everyone glued to their seats.
The show offered a seamless mix of narrative and song, painting a vivid picture of Dolly Parton’s life—from her early years to the poignant reality of her childlessness and her enduring love for her husband. The narrative was as compelling as the music, taking us through the highs and lows of Dolly’s journey, shedding new light on the meaning behind her lyrics. As someone who enjoys Dolly’s music but had never deeply considered the stories behind the songs, this performance was truly eye-opening and thought-provoking.
One of the most resonant moments was the line, “stop looking in the mirror and start looking outside the window.” This powerful message has lingered long after the show ended, prompting reflections on the broader themes of belonging and self-perception.

Tricia Paoluccio’s portrayal of Dolly was nothing short of mesmerising. Her stage presence and vocal performance were extraordinary, far exceeding expectations. This was no mere lip-sync or tribute act (although the lip sync section was my favourite!); Tricia brought her own flair to the role, delivering the songs with a heartfelt authenticity that made them her own. Steven Webb’s performance as Kevin was equally impressive. He skilfully balanced moments of sobering reflection with bursts of pure hilarity, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. His chemistry with Tricia was palpable, and his singing beautifully complemented hers.
The entire cast brought an infectious energy to the stage, making the audience feel like part of the show. It was clear they were enjoying every moment of their performance, which only added to the overall atmosphere of joy and engagement. The standing ovation at the end was well-deserved.

The musicians, particularly the guitarists and drummers, were brilliant. Their timing and sound levels were perfect, enhancing the show’s vibrant energy. The set, designed to resemble an attic in Halifax, was a nostalgic delight. The cluttered space, filled with an abacus, a yellow teapot, Christmas decorations and old games, perfectly captured the essence of Kevin’s return to his parents’ home. The industrial skyline evoked memories of a bygone era, adding a layer of authenticity and charm to the production.
Reflecting the “COVID times” with slapstick humour provided a light-hearted touch to Dolly’s life story, creating a delightful blend of comedy and introspection. This musical truly was a masterpiece, from its production and staging to its musical and narrative elements.

As Curve Theatre advertises, “Here You Come Again” brings all of Dolly Parton’s biggest hits together in a joyous new musical comedy. Featuring iconic songs like “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Islands in the Stream,” “I Will Always Love You,” and the titular “Here You Come Again,” this show is a celebration of Dolly’s wit, humour, and charm. Originally written by Bruce Vilanch, Gabriel Barre, and Tricia Paoluccio, and adapted for the UK by Jonathan Harvey, this musical teaches valuable lessons about life, love, and resilience.
“Here You Come Again” is a must-see. It’s a heart warming, humorous, and deeply moving tribute to one of music’s most beloved icons, sure to leave you smiling and reflecting on the magic of Dolly Parton’s music and life. Don’t miss it!
