Modern Milkman Miniml Starter Pack Review

Modern Milkman deliver fresh milk, groceries and household products direct to the customers door in returnable glass bottles, reuseable containers or recycled packaging. Their website says ‘we’re passionate about reducing plastic waste and are up at the crack of dawn doing our bit for the environment with every glass bottle we collect’.

The Miniml Starter Pack arrived in the post (they don’t deliver in my area yet) and was simply packaged in bubble wrap to protect the glass bottles. Each bottle contains 500mls of product. The starter pack consists of washing up liquid, hand soap and anti-bac surface cleaner. The bottles have a screw top lid and the pack includes a pump dispenser for each item. The pump dispensers I received were about 2 ½ inches too long, so I had to trim them down with scissors to fit them into the bottles. The bottles are simply labelled with the Miniml branding and clear product information. All the items are paraben, sulphate and chemical free.

The washing up liquid is scented with wild rhubarb and lemon and is a a slightly off clear colour. When I first smelled the product I found the scent to be very synthetic and quite overpowering, however when in the washing up bowl the perfume disapated and was much less noticeable. The consistency is runnier than my usual product and I found I needed to use about four pumps to get a bubbly bowl full. The results were acceptable, although I had to add extra product on my sponge for greasy items to ensure all residue was removed. Crockery and cutlery was shiny after drying and there was no perfume aftertaste.

The hand wash is scented with cucumber and aloe vera and is a very pale green colour. The scent of this product is hardly discernible. One pump from the dispenser provides sufficient product to form a lather and my hands felt clean after use. I suffer from eczema and did find the hand wash to be a little harsh on my hands.

The anti-bac surface cleaner is scented with wild lavender and is a very pale yellowish green colour. The lavender perfume is quite subtle. This product is very easy to use. Simply spray into surfaces and wipe over with a damp cloth. I found the delicate fragrance left a fresh feeling in the room and I felt confident that my surfaces were germ free and clean although this is a feeling with no evidence to back it up. I’m not sure how this could be done other than carrying out clinical trials in a laboratory.

In the current environment when we are all being encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle, I really like the concept of this product range. One of my family’s aims is to as far as possible banish single use plastics from our home. Using glass which can be refilled is a great option for many things, however, for these products, I am somewhat concerned that the glass bottles can be slippery and dangerous when being used with wet hands in bathrooms and kitchens.

Overall I like the Miniml idea, if the perfumes used were more natural and the bottles were made from recycled plastic and were refillable I would give these products 5/5.
