Miracle on 34 Parnie Street at the Tron Theatre Glasgow Review

This small and quirky theatre was the perfect venue for this fun Christmas panto. In a central location it was easy to find and walk able from both train stations. As well as a small bar, it also has a larger bar / restaurant with friendly and helpful staff ideal for a drink and bite to eat before the show. It was clean with a very relaxed atmosphere and tastefully decorated for Christmas.
The panto is a very loose Glaswegian take on the classic Christmas movie – Miracle on 34th Street about JH Confused – a Glasgow store in danger of closing due to a competing bigger better store. The store manager hires a very brash outspoken transvestite Santa Clause called Chris in an attempt to increase sales. However, Chris’s outrageous behaviour leads her into trouble and raises doubt as to whether Santa could be a lady!
I was unaware of the show’s storyline, so very surprised at first. However, I quickly began to enjoy this light hearted and fun (and at times just good old fashioned silly) panto. The jokes were very current and the one-liners excellent on all levels for all ages! Kids just loved it. There was a real feel of impromptu humour that filled the theatre with laughter. The audience participation was excellent, both on and off stage with some un-expecting adults and children being taken on stage to join in the fun!
The cast appeared to be having a great time; they were very natural, relaxed and talented. Johnny McKinght was excellent and extremely funny as Lady Santa. His outfits were fabulously tacky and his dancing on heels better than most women! Michelle Chantell Hopewell had a fantastic voice and Julie Wilson Nimmo was very good at undertaken a number of roles with various accents.
I really enjoyed my evening and laughed from beginning to end. I would absolutely recommend to friends and family of all ages. Although there was a Glasgow slant, the show was still very relevant to others from out with the city. I would rate this show a very funny 4 out of 5.
