Milton Jones, a staple on comedy panel show, Mock the Week, visited the Lowry Theatre in Salford this week with his Temple of Daft show, which is touring through to the end of November. Best know for his punning, quick one-liners, Jones puts his full gamut of comedic skills to use in this stand-up-story show. He was on stage at 8pm prompt… well I say ‘he’ was, actually it was an alter ego who introduced the show. Without giving too much away, this early section of the show sets the scene for the rest of the set. The Lowry is a great venue for comedy, and perfectly suited to Jones’ style.

It all feels very familiar Milton Jones territory, quick wit and loud shirts, his jokes are the narrative for his Temple of Daft storyline; he encourages a bit of audience participation, and it leads nicely into the support act. Chris Stokes, a self-proclaimed man-child, was an excellent support – laugh out loud funny with his self-deprecating style really drawing the audience in. Sandwiching his set between the two Milton Jones sections worked really well – Stokes providing a little light relief from the full-on bonkersness of Jones; he’s definitely one to look out for in the future.

When Milton Jones comes back on stage, it’s straight back into the story; the puns come thick and fast, although at times the pace slows and it does feel a little meandering and unsure in places, before coming back to the central tale.

The audience was a real mix and it was easy to see why – there’s something in the show for everyone, and whilst it made me chuckle along, the guy sitting behind me guffawed loudly throughout. Milton Jones is not everyone’s cup of tea, but then that would make the world a dull place, and the world would be a dull place without the very clever, very funny Milton Jones and his colourful shirts.

Rating: 4/5
