Milkshake Party Party Live at St George’s Hall, Bradford Review

Getting on towards the end of a pretty standard and chilly half term holiday, my 2 year old and 5 year old were certainly ready for an interesting afternoon out. Having been confined to the house for most of the week, they were starting to suffer with cabin fever a bit, and a trip to see some of their favourite Milkshake characters seemed an ideal way to get them out of the house.

Firstly, St. George’s Hall is really simple to get to and well signposted from the M606. There is ample car parking at a large multi-story car park just across the road and the theatre itself is always full of friendly and knowledgeable staff. We use this theatre often, and have never had a single issue or complaint with it.

Milkshake Live uses a mixture of singing, dancing, audience participation and storytelling to involve the children in a plan to throw a surprise birthday party for Milkshake Bear. The presenters will be familiar to those who watch Milkshake in the mornings, and they decide to invite a number of Milkshake Bear’s friends to the party. A number of familiar characters are then introduced, including the Bananas in Pyjamas, Noddy, Chloe from Chloe’s Closet, the Little Princess and a few more.

The presenters and characters did have lots of children joining in with familiar songs, dancing and participating in the show, but my two, who are fans of most of the Milkshake shows, quickly got a bit fed up of the story. The sound quality really wasn’t great and a few of the kids were struggling to follow the story properly. My youngest was also really upset that Peppa Pig wasn’t there, despite being shown on the advertising material on the official Milkshake Live website.

That’s not to say that this was a bad afternoon, it wasn’t. The kids did have a nice time whilst they were there. We just didn’t feel that it kept them entertained and rapt in the way that a number of the kids theatre productions we’ve seen have.

Value for money wise, at just over £40 for a family of 4, I would say it was just about reasonable. I’m not sure that I would take my kids to see next year’s show, but equally, some of the kids there were having a super time.

Rating: 3/5
