Having a husband who is a serious gamer means it is always easy to buy gifts for him. He owns several gaming consoles and loves nothing more than new accessories to go with them. Between my husband and the kids (who also love gaming like their father) we own and have bought many gaming headsets over the years, from various brands and price brackets. When I first found out the price for the Logitech Astro A50 X Lightspeed Wireless + Base Station gaming headset my first thought was who would actually pay that much for a gaming headset. After trying out the headset, the answer to that question is me.
The headset comes nicely presented in a box, with all the components inside in separate boxes. My first impression was that the headset looks and feels expensive. It’s compatible with Xbox Series X / S, PlayStation 5 or PC / Mobile. Once you open the box there is a QR code to scan inside the lid. This takes you to an app that shows you step by step how to set up the headset with each console. There is also a leaflet inside the box that explains this as well but in less detail. A clever feature of the headset is PLAYSYNC which allows you to connect 3 systems simultaneously. You can easily switch between the systems using the PLAYSYNC button on the ear cup. The LED Bluetooth receiver base unit has 3 USB-C ports, 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs and 1 HDMI 2.1 output. Enabled with LIGHTSPEED wireless technology, 24bit/48kHz audio.
Even though the headset initially felt heavier than other headsets we have owned, they are extremely comfortable to wear even after a few hours of gameplay. The ear pads are comfortable and soft and made of a mesh like fabric. They don’t make your ears sweat like the vinyl / faux leather ones tend to do. The ear cushions are magnetic and easily removable if wanting to change / replace them. The ear cups rotate so that they mould to the shape of your head snuggly but not tightly. Some headsets can feel like they are pressure gripping your head which these don’t. The height adjusts on each side with a smooth slide mechanism and the headband moves slightly and has padding to ensure a comfortable fit.
One of the best features of the headset was that fully charged they last for 24 hours. That’s an amazing amount of time and means that they don’t need constantly charging or having to stop game play as the charge is running out. The headset magnetically fit into the base unit to charge.
The best feature of the headset though is the sound quality which is honestly amazing. The Dolby sound through the Xbox S was cinema quality and completely immersed you in the game on a whole new level to the norm. The sound was so crisp and precise that you could hear footsteps of people approaching in the game before you even saw them! The kids were mesmerised by the sound quality and are now constantly trying to pinch the headset from their father! You can easily adjust the game / voice balance using the controls on the ear cup to suit your in game sound preferences for each game. The headset uses Pro-G graphene drivers to provide ground-breaking clarity and response for exact audio separation, location and timing accuracy. There is a volume control on the ear cup.
Broadcast quality mic is flexible so that you can position it where best suits you. To mute the mic you simply flip it up which is another clever feature. When flipped up the mic is fully out of your way for when you want to use the headset but don’t need the mic.
The price bracket for this gaming headset is definitely at the higher end of the scale but these are definitely worth paying the extra for as an investment for something my husband would use every day. We go through several sets of gaming headsets every year as they tend to break usually within a few months so the better quality and sturdiness of this headset will hopefully last longer and make them value for money. The sound quality is simply outstanding and that alone is worth paying that extra for.
