I have a nephew who adores watching his mum and dad do DIY at home. He is too small to help with the real tools so when I had the chance to review the LittleDug Workstation I was really excited for him. The workbench came in a really strong box and when we opened the box there were a number of large sturdy pieces plus a bag containing smaller pieces and the tools.
I usually find putting together children’s toys incredibly stressful, especially on Christmas morning when everyone is a little sleep deprived and lacking in caffeine. It normally involves me trying to do it with the kids, and then asking them to leave me to it when they inevitably annoy me with incessant questions of “where does this go?” or “is it ready yet?” whilst I try to figure out where in the heck I’m up to with the instructions. Usually I find that I don’t have the right sized screwdriver, or that the spanner is for a smaller nut. It has, in the past, actually put me off buying certain toys.

BigDug have created the LittleDug Workstation and Toolkit and solved all my problems with their easy to follow photograph instructions. In fact as a test I let my 10 year old build it by herself and she had it done in less than 15 minutes. Because the plastic is really sturdy I felt confident that she couldn’t break anything and everything she needed, including the tools, were included.
The box includes the workbench, tools, nuts, bolts, play vice, storage bins and stickers to decorate, there were 64 pieces in all. I think for the price the LittleDug Workstation offers incredible value and my nephew has had hours of fun already. We have had to take it apart and then put it back together a couple of times to move it between houses and it has been easy and quick to do.

If you are looking for a Christmas present for a budding builder I think the LittleDug Workstation is an excellent choice. It offers a great opportunity for little ones to explore imaginative play in an interesting way, the tools are chunky enough to allow children to manipulate them easily, but the challenge of tightening the nuts and bolts gives them chances to improve fine motor skills and build their hand and finger muscles. My only criticism is the height of the Workstation, my nephew is an average sized almost 3 year old and the Workstation did seem quite low. I understand that if the Workstation was higher it would need to be larger overall to maintain the stability of the product. Ultimately for the price point I think the LittleDug Workstation offers great value for money, opportunities for learning and will keep kids occupied for hours.
