Little Shop of Horrors is currently running in the Theatre in Glasgow until Saturday 19th November before heading to Blackpool.
Little Shop of Horrors started life as a low budget film in the 1960’s directed by Roger Corman. It was then adapted to the stage by the writer Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken who continued to work together on the Disney classics The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Little Shop of Horrors premiered in 1982 in the Orpheum Theatre, New York where it continued to run for five years.
Seymour Krelborn, played by Sam Lupton, uses his unusual plant to help Mr Mushnik and his failing business, Mushniks Flowers in the dead-end area, Skid Row and also in a bid to win co-worker Audrey’s (Stephanie Clift) affection. Little did Seymour know this plant, which appeared during an eclipse of the sun, had a rather particular carnivorous appetite for human blood! Orin, Audrey’s bully of a boyfriend is played by Rhydian, the classic Welsh singer who hit the big time after his success in 2007’s X factor.
The show is great fun with lots of humors moments, I loved the everchanging headlines on the advertising board! The three-piece band is cleverly situated within the Music Box Shop on Skid Row.
This small cast sing and dance their hearts out – my personal favorite was Somewhere That’s Green beautifully sung by Stephanie Clift but it really was a fabulous performance from all.
The Theatre Royal is located in Hope Street within the city centre and is well served by public transport as well as multi-storey carparking close by. We sat in the Dress Circle which has comfortable wide spacious seating with lots of leg room, quite a treat! The Theatre has been recently refurbished with a lovely blend of old and new with a great ambience.
Tickets cost from £14.90 to £43.30 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
