Lifelong Books Snowflake Trilogy by Dan Fallon Review

Reviewed by Angela Paull

I was sent the Lifelong Books “Snowflake” Trilogy by Dan Fallon to review; Snowflake and Hope meet the White Tiger, Snowflake’s Adventures on Mount Lifelong and The Journey to River Rose.

The trilogy consists of 3 short and brightly illustrated books which tell the story of Snowflake, a unique white Gorilla.

If you take the books at face value, the story tells of Snowflake’s journey to the summit of Mount Lifelong. He gets there with the help of his friends and the teachings of a wise old Silverback Gorilla, Charlie, from whom he learns the Seven Sacred Movements. These movements help him to make decisions throughout his journey and achieve the ultimate goal of reaching the summit and meeting the White Tiger.

The books are enjoyable as a simple story and the bright colourful illustrations are very appealing to young children.

However, the books have a serious purpose. This is the importance of movement for ongoing health benefits. Snowflake’s Seven Sacred Movements are exercises that the family can do together. It is worth also checking out the Lifelong website (www.thelifelongworkshops.com) for further information – on the homepage it states the following: “Our vision is for every individual human being to be able to carry out simple functional-for-life exercises, so that they can live a long and independent life.”

It is quite easy to see how you should carry out some of the “Seven Sacred Movement” exercises from the illustrations in the book but there were a couple that were a bit tricky to try and decipher just from a picture. However, as a means of encouraging children to exercise the book is an interesting concept and there could be lots of fun to be had. It certainly beats sitting in front of the TV as a family activity!

Aside from the exercises the books also convey the importance of friendship and accepting your own uniqueness. As the White Tiger says “The meaning of life…..is a life with meaning.  This means listening to your heart, being grateful for the little things in life and always loving life for what it is…a gift.”

In summary, there is a lot more to these books than immediately meets the eye and I could see them working very well as an educational tool in schools/workshops. For me personally, I’m not sure they need to be a trilogy – it would make more sense if they were in one volume as they wouldn’t really work individually. I really love the ethos of the books though and completely agree with the messages they send. These will have a permanent place on our bookshelf.
