Last of the Duty Free

The Kings Theatre in Edinburgh is a beautiful theatre in the heart of the city centre. Parking is limited and expensive but the area is well served by public transport. On arrival at the theatre we were warmly welcomed and shown to our seats by the very attentive staff.
Duty Free was a popular television sit-com in the mid 80’s, pulling up to 17 million viewers and is still regularly shown on some satellite channels. The show follows two couples, David and Amy and Robert and Linda holidaying in Spain and the farcical affair between David and Linda.
Three of the original cast have reunited for the stage show – Keith Barron, Gwen Taylor and Neil Stacy. The show picks up where the TV series left off, back in Spain with a rendezvous between an aging David and Linda. Their romantic get-together is soon interrupted by the arrival of their respective spouses. The show has a definite sit-com feel but despite a few funny moments it did feel a little flat in parts. The introduction of the young newly weds Jeremy and Clare was welcome and the contrast between the three marriages added interest. The holiday atmosphere was definitely captured with the set and props and Graham Elwell does a great job as Carlos, the weary Spanish waiter.
Fans of the TV series will enjoy this show, especially with the original cast members but if you’re looking for the laugh-a-minute of more modern comedies then it is perhaps not for you.
