La Cage aux Folles at the King’s Theatre Glasgow Review

Reviewed by Emily Crombie
I have just discovered my new favourite musical, La Cage aux Folles, running at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow until Saturday (29 July 2017).
You are swept away in a flurry of colour and glamour from the word go, written by Jean Poiret, La Cage aux Folles became a 1970’s hit film before becoming musical.
It is a story of acceptance and love set around the Drag Club, La Cage aux Folles in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera. The show is staged with the charisma and glamour of the time with amazing costumes.
When young Jean-Michele announces his engagement to Anne and wished to bring her draconian parents to meet his own unique family, the craziness begins.
Father, Georges is the owner of the Cabaret club, La Cage aux Folles, and the mother figure in his life is Georges’ husband, Albin and his alter-ego, the Flamboyant Drag Queen, Zaza.
Needless to say, all does not go smoothly with hilarious consequences!
John Partridge stole the show as Albin/Zaza, supported by a strong cast notably Adrian Zmed as Georges and Dougie Carter as Jean-Michele. Jason, the exuberant butler/maid played by Samson Ajewole was hilarious. I would have love to have heard more of Marti Webb but her voice is amazing.
There is a fabulous musical score, We Are What We Are / I Am What I Am will resonate with many for all different reason.
Audience participation was part of the fun of the show, not only the audience to the show but also the Cabaret audience.
I think La Cage aux Folles is the first show I have attended that was given a standing ovation at the interval! At the end of the show there was not a person sitting and justifiably so! Be quick and get your tickets while it runs in Glasgow until Saturday as part of its UK tour.
The King’s Theatre is located on Bath Street in Glasgow’s City Centre. There is good access with both public transport and by car.
