The award winning Kouchin Bangladeshi and Indian restaurant in Ashford stands out in the high street with its illuminated sign and it’s equally impressive inside. The clean and fresh, contemporary decor creates a modern and relaxed atmosphere. It has also won the prestigious Highly Recommended Best South Asian Restaurant in the London Suburbs at the 2013 Asian Curry Awards.
We visited on a Thursday evening and found parking easy on the high street directly outside the restaurant and the restaurant itself relatively quiet. There are a wide variety of Indian and Bangladeshi dishes available on the menu including an extensive range of specials which I found refreshing alongside the classic dishes you would expect to find. The dishes are a mix of old and new – Indian dishes of the last 30 years and a 200 year old style of cooking. There is also a takeaway menu available so you can order your favourite dishes online or by telephone for collection or delivery.
We were seated straightaway on arrival, given our menus and served drinks immediately. After looking through the extensive menu we started our meal with poppadums and chutneys (£0.95), we also tried the Tandoori Prawns (£5.95) and Onion Bhaji (£2.25). I decided on the braised lamb with yoghurt (£7.95) for my main – Loin of lamb cooked in homemade masala, methi, coriander, cumin, garlic, fresh lemon juice, chick pea flour and finished with yoghurt. Cooked with a slow flame – and it was beautifully tender and full of flavour, the lamb just melts in your mouth, while my partner ordered the King Prawn Curry (£8.95). All of which was thoroughly enjoyed. The food tastes really authentic, fresh and of great quality.
The service could not be faulted and there were plenty of welcoming and attentive staff on hand to ensure this. The attentive team of waiters meant we never had to ask for our drinks to be replenished. Everything was served promptly and all of our main course dishes were brought to the table at the same time alongside hot plates. A waiter checked during each of our courses that everything was ok and when we did ask for some Mango Chutney to accompany our main dishes, a perfectly sized portion was brought to us immediately. All the portions were big enough to share and we were also offered the leftovers to take home (so we could enjoy it all again later). At no point were we made to feel rushed.
After eating 2 courses we were too full to sample the dessert menu but there is plenty of choice should you have room!
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Kouchin restaurant for great quality food, excellent service and overall great value for money. I look forward to going back soon to sample some of the other dishes on the menu.
