As a big fan of detective shows I was looking forward to watching Inspector Montalbano Collection Six. It had been recommended to me but I had missed it when it was on the TV.

The series is set in Sicily, Italy and centres around the main character Inspector Montalbano who is a well-known and respected detective. The programme is in Italian with English subtitles, although I am not an Italian speaker I would comment that I believe that the translation as it felt very natural. Some of the phrases used I would imagine had been anglicised as they would not have worked in a direct translation. The setting was predictably stunning, set around Sicily, I was very jealous of the Inspectors house with balcony overlooking the sea.

The DVD contains 4 episodes, each of which is about 2 hours long, more like a film. We see the Inspector at work solving burglaries, murders and sometimes getting on the wrong side of his superiors as he ‘does what it takes’ to solve the crimes. We also see his personal side and his relationship with Livia, his long term on/off girlfriend.

I found the series really entertaining, a perfect mix between the suspense of a crime drama but also injected with humour. I particularly liked the character Catarella the station officer who seems unable to take down anyone’s name correctly!

I would defiantly recommend this and will be watching the other series.
