The familiar Genesis story of Joseph and his 11 brothers and father Jacob is brought to the Churchill Theatre in this modern interpretation of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s classic. All of the familiar songs are there, complete with children’s choir, narrator and THAT coat. Don’t forget the loin cloth. There’s always a loin cloth.

The production is not the full length version of ‘Joseph’ as it was written nearly five decades ago. It’s a shame that so much has been cut from the show as it doesn’t follow in places and makes it quite unbalanced. The narrator features heavily in the first half, whereas Joseph is more prominent following the break. Neither the lighting nor choreography is what I would have expected from such a big production, but again, the second half is better than the first half in this production.

The cast features X Factor finalist Lloyd Daniels playing a very young looking Joseph, with Danielle Hope (The Wizard of Oz) and Matt Lapinskas, famous for his role in Eastenders. All of the cast members did well with the performance, but the stand out performance of the night lies with Danielle Hope, who kept the evening together with her powerful duets and dancing. I would have liked to have seen more solos from Joseph though, who is one of the big draws of the show. There seems to be some unnecessary rewordings of some of the songs, none of which needed altering.

It was a good production of a familiar musical with all the sing-a-long songs you’d expect, with a modern twist and a young energetic cast. This is a good show to see with the grandparents or the children for a fun night out.
