Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the New Victoria Theatre Review

12-16 September 2017

Reviewed by Emma Booth

I went with my 7-year-old daughter to the New Victoria Theatre in Woking last night (12 September 2017) to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

This family musical tells the famous biblical story through song (including Those Canaan Days, Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door To Me) and is all about Joseph who is disliked by his brothers, as Joseph is his father’s favourite child, so they decide to sell him. The story then continues as his fortunes go down and then up and how he forgives his brothers. The show is told entirely through song with lots of catchy songs.

The set was very vibrant with great lighting. Alongside great characters, there was an amazing choir all with young people who were stunning. What surprised me was how this was such a great entertaining family show, this is probably not something I would have thought would entertain my daughter but she absolutely loved it.

I thought the first half was more upbeat and lively and the second a bit sadder with the end being like a party and great fun.

Joseph was played by Joe McElderry, who’s famous for winning the X-Factor in 2009, and he was just brilliant giving so much energy throughout all the show. Trina Hill, who was the narrator, had such a powerful voice.

We had great seats in the stalls and as always, the New Victoria Theatre is always a pleasure to visit, I just love the atmosphere with the piano being played as we get our drinks and head of to find our seats.

We had a great night and really enjoyed the entire show, a massive 5 out of 5 stars from us.
