When I first picked up this book I was a little intrigued by the subject matter. I have a little soft spot for Sunderland football club as they were my late father’s team. I have no idea why a man from Dublin would choose to support a team from the north east of England but he did and as a result I always look out for their results.
This excellent football book details the season 1912/13 and is a great read for any football fan no matter what team you support. I could not put the book down and apart from match reports that are written with a modern feel there are also pieces written about what was going on in the world outside of football.
1912 was of course the year the Titanic sank and there are pieces about what was going on in the world of politics. Being Irish I found the piece about Ireland very interesting. All of the pieces outside football were very interesting. But this is a book primarily about a team that nearly became the first side to complete a league and cup double in the 20th century.
I would definitely recommend this book to any football fan as its one of the best football books I have ever read.
