I used to be a very avid reader but since having the kids, and the job getting bigger, life has very much gotten in the way so I rarely have time to sit and read a book these days. I will usually therefore revert to books I know and love rather than picking up anything new, so that I don’t get disappointed! I was therefore intrigued to receive two books from Elaine Robertson North to review, one called I can’t tell you why and the other called Bring me to life.

I Can’t Tell You Why is the story of talent agent Dani and her relationships, good, bad, beautiful and ugly, with her friends, partners and clients. Dani definitely makes some big mistakes and she is often quite endearingly flawed, but equally makes you want to say “Why on earth did you do that Dani?!” at least once a chapter! If you like contemporary romance fiction that keeps you guessing and entertained then this book is for you. It’s really easy to read, but has some depth, so it is interesting and enjoyable. There are also some deeper themes such as family trauma and infidelity, plus the emotions and challenges that go alongside those. This book is Elaine’s debut novel and the skill in her writing is apparent, including insider knowledge of the entertainment scene, so you feel like you are there with the characters. I don’t particularly like gratuitous sex scenes, so I was pleased that while there was chemistry between the characters, the sexy scenes are left to your imagination!

Bring Me To Life is another book by Elaine, set in the entertainment business, this time the world of newspapers. It is a psychological thriller which truly grips you from the first line: “She hadn’t meant to kill her. Not initially, anyway”. This is a real page turner, telling the story of Grace and her bully boss, cheating ex boyfriend, and controlling mother. The characters are interesting and well rounded, helping you gradually immerse into Grace’s predicament where she is unhappy in life and tries to find a way to regain control. You certainly get to like Grace, and you also follow Anna who becomes Grace’s life coach. The relationship between them starts out well, however things deteriorate and you learn how nasty Anna can be. Full of twists and turns with a plot with pace keeps you interested and engaged to the end.

These two books would be a fantastic Christmas gift for the person in your life who loves books, and in particular contemporary romance and psychological thrillers as reading these books would be a great way to spend the wind down in the Twixmas period. The author Elaine spent 25 years in marketing and communication, and you can feel her knowledge of these areas coming through her writing. These two books are her first, so definitely look out for more from this author in the future. I’m interested to see what she comes up with next!
