What better way to step into spring than a visit to the jukebox musical ‘Here and Now’ – featuring the songs of the iconic band Steps – which is taking to the stage at the Theatre Royal Plymouth this week.

With a central location on Plymouth’s Royal Parade, getting to the theatre was easy with plenty of nearby parking. The theatre was very busy last evening with all visitors eagerly awaiting their chance to relive some of their favourite Steps songs. With souvenirs purchased, the ever helpful front of house staff soon directed us into the auditorium where we greeted by a view of the outside of the Better Best Bargain store where the story was to unfold.

This upbeat show isn’t actually based on the group themselves – though they were a vital part of the production team – but focuses on the friendship between four of the store workers all of whom have love-life problems and aspire for a happier life.

Based on a book written by Shaun Kitchener, the script is full of humour and heartfelt dialogue as the four friends battled their own challenges.

Over 22 well-known Steps musical numbers form an integral part of the show with all of them clearly fitting into the story and each song having its own place – with some interpretation – and strong links to the theme of love and heartbreak.

Choreographer Matt Cole has worked some amazing dance routines into the show which were danced with such energy by the talented and hard-working ensemble. The use of the shopping trolleys in the routine was so clever – maybe don’t try this in your local supermarket though!!!

Tom Rogers’ designs were great – keep a lookout for the subtle references to Steps such as the trash-eddy waste skips and the use of aisles 5,6,7 and 8. Combined with superb lighting by Howard Hudson, a kaleidoscope of colours was created throughout.

The four main friends each played their parts brilliantly.

Lara Denning as Caz was outstanding. She certainly owned the stage with wonderful vocals and such commitment to every song. What an amazing leading lady.

Jacqui Dubois as Vel had such energy and great comedy timing whilst Rosie Singha’s portrayal of Neeta showed such commitment and sensitivity.

Blake Patrick Anderson portrayed his role as Robbie well working through the character’s insecurity. The cheeky, charming delivery of his one-liners was great.

Directed by Rachel Kavanaugh – all the other main characters and talented ensemble worked well together with enthusiasm and commitment which never flagged.

A technical problem last evening did mean that the production had to stop for a short while but once sorted the story resumed and seamlessly carried on.

The mega-mix finale was great with all the audience on their feet enjoying the well-known songs. I’m sure everyone headed home with songs still playing in their heads.

A camp, over-the-top production but what a delight to watch. A fun joyful celebration presented by a superb, enthusiastic cast.

Another brilliant production at Theatre Royal Plymouth.
