Wow, was very excited to receive a Helly Hansen Kids’ Treasure Midlayer Fleece Jacket.  It was packaged really well and arrived in such good condition.  I was happy that it arrived in a box with not too much excess packaging.

We are a fan of Helly Hansen goods due to their durability and quality of their products (we are keen users of watercraft so have lots of Helly Hansen and other outdoorsy products from other providers).  I can say though that the kids treasure mid layer fleece did not disappoint.

We received the navy fleece in a size 7 for our 5 and a half year old.  It’s not unusual for him to wear items that are sized up and this fleece fit him well but was a tad big.  The colour of the fleece is a very rich, deep navy and unfortunately my pictures do not do it justice.  The fleece looks so smart on. It’s longer line as well so it will keep the entire torso warm in the winter months.

Helly hansen say that their “midlayer fleece jacket will keep you warm on snow days at the cabin, or simply hanging out. It features a mix of soft, plush fleece and slick-face fleece elements.”  And it is definitely warm! Within minutes of wearing the fleece our little one was warm and toasty.

As I said, we are an outdoorsy family so this will be perfect on autumn and winter days to wear underneath waterproofs, even under waterproof gear when our little one is in the kayak.  I love the fact that the fleece has a smoother section towards the bottom at the back which I assume is the slick face feature.  The reverse of this section is still plush, cosey fleece.  This means that when sitting down, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable and bulky.  The fleece has a very sturdy zip to keep the jacket together.  Which is good when your child doesn’t undo zips properly!

What I also loved about this fleece was that it featured a section across the front top of the hood that was smooth instead of fleecy.  This means that when it’s raining, or just when it’s cold the hood of the fleece doesn’t stick out from underneath the hood of a rain coat or thicker winter coat so it doesn’t matter if it gets wet. It also means that the fleece material doesn’t rub and wear out.

Now, I’m not one for following washing instructions but I will on this fleece.  There are washing instructions to not use fabric conditioner so need to ensure that this doesn’t get picked up with our normal washing.  I get the reason why, fabric softener or other detergents that have softeners in them, can actually have a negative impact on certain types of fabrics.  So although it would keep things soft, over time for this fleece it could reduce the performance of the jacket.  This jacket is so soft and lovely that I will definitely follow the directions.

I would give the HELLY HANSEN UK Kids’ Treasure Midlayer Fleece Jacket 4 out of 5.  I really loved the softness of the fleece, but it is a little over what I would normally spend on a fleece for my child.  I do really love the quality of the jacket and it did really keep him warm.  It will be ideal for walks, paddleboarding/kayaking and general adventures with the family.
