I was elated to hear I had tickets to review Heathers at Aylesbury Theatre! I’ve heard so many good things about the show from friends who had seen it before.
The theatre was very easy to find, as it was well sign posted on the way. It was surrounded by restaurants and bars, which is useful if you want to stop for something to eat before or after the show! Parking was very simple, as it was just opposite from the theatre. I couldn’t help but notice how modern and beautiful the theatre looked!
As we entered the foyer, it was busy with theatre fans of all ages! We were immediately welcomed in by friendly staff that showed us to our seats with.
The auditorium is very spacious with a lot of leg room on each row of seats. The show started right on time and we were drawn in straight away.
In the story of Heathers, a young girl named Veronica Sawyer joins a popular group of three girls, all named Heather. She finds herself in a sticky situation when the Heathers bully her best friend, Martha Dunnstock (in which they called her Martha Dumptruck). As Veronica gains her popularity, she is approached by a young man by the name of Jason Dean (JD). As the show goes and their relationship grows stronger, JD’s urge to wipe out the popular kids grows too. The kids at school make their crude jokes and threats to others, but three students don’t expect what’s coming to them. JD had finally gotten his way, committing three murders, covering them as suicides. The show really emphasises on how schools don’t take enough care on how teen suicide and mental health is handled, making a mockery of the kids. Veronica realises the situation she’s been put in, and despite her love for JD, she has to stand up for herself. It ends with a more positive note with no more JD, no school heirarchy, and making a full circle to the beginning of the show, about making life beautiful.
The cast were brilliant. Each Heather had put everything into creating a typical popular girl. With Verity Thompson as Heather Chandler, Elise Zavou as Heather Duke, and Billie Bowman as Heather McNamara, this was going to be an exciting and sassy show! They had perfectly displayed the hierarchy with their arrogant personalities, and monochrome coloured suits in red, green, and yellow that set them aside from everyone else. JD, played by the amazing Jacob Fowler, had portrayed a creepy psychopath with his sly and concealing expressions. His dark outfit had also made him stand out from the other characters, physically depicting him as different. Veronica Sawyer, played by Jenna Innes, was phenomenal! Her voice was absolutely stunning and had the attention of the whole theatre. She portrayed such love and desire for JD, even when knowing what she was doing was wrong.
Each dance move was in perfect sync, with strong movements from the heathers to reflect on their dangerously evil characters. The ensemble had pictured a high school cast brilliantly, with a variation of cliques and types of students, such as nerds, jocks, and skater kids.
In addition to everything, I would recommend watching if you are aged 16+, as it does contain some adult language and topics.
I was extremely impressed by the whole production and would definitely recommend going. I can’t wait to watch it again.
Don’t miss out while it’s on tour!
Rating: I would rate this 5 stars
