Prepare to step back into ye olde times at Guy Fawkes Inn, located directly opposite York Minster in the heart of historical York.
Entering a bustling pub we made our way through to a quieter back corridor and found the restaurant. Although it was not clear where to wait we were soon greeted by a friendly staff member and showed to our seats. An open fire heated the timber floored, candle lit dining room, creating a relaxed ambience away from the busy bar.
We were readily informed of any dishes that were not available, avoiding any disappointment when it came to ordering. With a choice from the set menu, Valentine’s menu and the normal menu, there was plenty to choose from with vegetarian options.
As a meat lover I decided to go for the cider braised rabbit with tarragon mash (£9.50) and my guest ordered the braised lamb shank with sage mash (£11.45). Looking around the room we became very excited for the meal. The battered haddock with mushy peas and hand cut chips (£11.45) ordered by the table next to us looked especially appetising.
We did wait a while for the food but it was well worth it. The waitress served us very generous portions of well presented food alongside a helping of winter vegetables. The lamb fell off the bone exactly how it should and the bacon scattered on the rabbit made it extra scrumptious. The house red wine accompanied and washed down the meal very well.
The desert menu quickly made us forget about our calorie counting and we ordered the apple and plum crumble with creme anglaise (£4.95) along with the dark chocolate and orange terrine (£4.95). Both tasted heavenly and I strongly recommend the crumble as a sweet winter warmer.
Throughout the night the staff were helpful and didn’t once rush us. We were offered a tour of the rooms but had spent so long finishing our wine we had to run off to get the train. If the rooms meet the same standards as the restaurant I would happily pay to spend the night there.
A night at Guy Fawkes Inn was the perfect way to spend a snowy evening, escaping the cold weather with a hearty and delicious meal and fantastic service.
