Myself, a friend and her 9 year old daughter recently visited The White Horse in Harpenden for dinner. It is a warm and friendly old pub in a country setting on the outskirts of Harpenden in Hatching Green. It is very easy to get to, J9 off the M1, and has plenty of parking.
On arrival at this charming old pub with low beams hanging with antique copper jugs we were greeted by very friendly, polite staff and shown to our table. Once seated the waiter gave us our menus, explained the specials and took our drinks order.
After looking at the great choice of freshly prepared meals on the menu we skipped having a starter and ordered : 8oz Casterbridge Rump Cap Steak, Chips & Watercress with Garlic Butter or Peppercorn Sauce, Roasted Cotswold Leg of Lamb and Free-range Sausages & Mash, Onion Gravy. As the sausage and mash was for my friend’s daughter they reduced the portion size and changed the mash for chips.
We didn’t have too long to wait for the meals and there was fresh bread and butter on the table. When the food arrived it looked and smelt gorgeous and tasted even better. I ordered the steak well done and it was cooked to perfection! It was quite a large steak but tasted so good I could have eaten it again. All the meals were extremely tasty and thoroughly enjoyed.
After the main meals, which were very filling, we ordered deserts – Valrhona Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream and Rhubarb pudding with custard and again we were not disappointed. The brownie was very chocolaty and the rhubarb was very fresh and tasty. We ended the meal with coffee including a Babyccino (Specially for Children – frothy milk dusted with chocolate).
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this venue. The food was exceptional – excellent quality, fresh and very tasty, the staff were friendly, polite, accommodating and efficient and very good value for money. If you want good food in a warm friendly atmosphere then you must pay a visit and try it out. I highly recommend it, far superior to other pub restaurants and pub food. The only downside is that they do not offer a children’s menu but they do welcome children and will reduce the portion sizes of the meals for children and the Babyccino for the kids is a nice touch so they kids aren’t left out while everyone is drinking coffee after their meals.
