Grease the Musical at the King’s Theatre Glasgow Review

Reviewed by Lorna Templeton

Grease is a musical everyone that knows and loves. With a cracking soundtrack and a lively storyline the stage was immediately set for a hit, and the show didn’t disappoint. We attended the King’s Theatre in Glasgow to see the show (where it is running from 9-20 May 2017).

Danielle Hope’s (Over the Rainbow winner) stunning voice shone through as Sandy, and she played the character’s sweet innocence well, although looked more comfortable in the final act when undergoing her transformation from the innocent, good girl Sandy!

Tom Parker, in his first ever theatrical role, (previously of band “The Wanted”) lacked some of the stage presence of a trained musical theatre star but came into his own as the show went on, and the audience were on their feet for his rendition of “Sandy”.

Louisa Lytton (EastEnders, The Bill and Strictly Come Dancing) acted and danced flawlessly as Rizzo, and was very watchable, although she did have a slightly weaker singing voice. Her performance of “There are worse things I could do” was nevertheless full of emotion and worked well.

The surprise star of the show was Gary Lamont as Vince Fontaine, and even more so as the Teen Angel. His stage presence and vocal abilities absolutely stole the show. The audience would have happily watched him all night and showed their appreciation when he took his bow.

Overall the show was wonderful fun and the whole ensemble cast gelled well together. The wide range of ages in the audience was testament to Grease’s success throughout the years and this production was both fresh and faithful to the show’s roots. Well worth seeing for the whole family.
