With two children who love building things we are always on the lookout for toys that let them be creative, be off screens and toys that can be played with over and over again.
We were recently gifted the Geomag (763) Mechanics Loops & Turns 130 piece set to review.
When we first looked on the back of the box I was a little worried how well it would work as there is actually a number of sets available that can be joined together to make a larger track. However, my children started to put it together I was relieved that actually each set works perfectly well on its own. Phew!

The pieces are made from 74% recycled plastics which I love, especially as we are trying to reduce the number of plastic toys we have. Although the pieces are small, they are very well made and could be passed onto other children to play with once your children are finished with it. This is always a winner when I am making purchases because I hate toys that will end up in landfill.
STEM toys are another great choice for us. This particular set helps the understanding of gravity and the laws of physics, and magnetism. Geomag mechanics is different from the usual magnetic type’s toys with just the rods, it has a magnetic cannon and has mechanical elements within the construction, with the ability to rotate areas triggering new chain reactions allowing learning opportunities as they play. Even my husband thought this was pretty cool! I particularly liked the fact the tubes of the track were completely clear so you can watch the sphere as it moves through the track rather then just see it through open areas.

The set is aged 8+, my nearly 9-year-old struggled to put some of the pieces together initially, he did start to get frustrated with it. He did manage to put it together eventually, this actually added to the challenge which I thought was better than it being too easy. Once it was together my 6-year-old was able to join in with the fun as they took it in turns trying the marble run out. It reminded me a lot of a pinball machine but with more ability to change how the ball moves through the tracks.
Once they had played with it for a few days, they were really keen to take it apart and build a new version. Again, another sign of a good toy is when it can be taken apart and remade to something slightly different and played with again. It was also much easier for them to build it the second time as they were much more familiar with how all the pieces fit together.
As mentioned earlier there are a number of sets available which can then be added together to make a super track. This one is the loops and turns, which has a 360-degree loop in it, the basic combination suggestion is to add the race track version to this one.
If you are looking for a toy for a slightly older child that loves to construct things, I would really recommend this product. At the price it would be a great item for a birthday or Christmas list. We like it so much that we will buy the race track version to add to this so even more combinations can be made.
